Woodstock

Background This occurred on August 15-18 in 1969. It was held in Bethel, New York Was held on a farm owned by Max Yasgur The big main bands that were present were: The Who, Crosby Still and Nash, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead. Most of the people who attended this were beatniks, flower children, and hippies

Before the music… Four men by the name of Michael Lang, Artie Kornfield, Joel Rosenmen, John Roberts. Roberts and Rosenmen were looking for a way to invest in something that would make them money. Lang was known as one of the most persevering spirit behind the whole project. He was also known for his Miami Pop Kornfield was the co-creator of Woodstock. These men needed a place for this huge event.

The Plan They had originally wanted to set up a recording studio for rock stars to come and relax in the actual town in Woodstock New York. So they decided to have a music festival to raise money for it. They wanted it to be held in Wallkill New York, but could not get it. Passed a law in July 2nd 1969 that banned the concert to be held in there town.

Max Yasgur Born December 15th 1919 He was the neighbor of Artie Kornfield’s cousin Lenore. “I’m a farmer… I don’t know how to speak to twenty people at one time, let alone a crowd like this. But I think you people have proven something to the world — not only to the Town of Bethel, or Sullivan County, or New York State; you’ve proven something to the world. This is the largest group of people ever assembled in one place.”

Lineup There were 38 bands lined up ready to perform. For day one the lineup was: Richie Havens Sweetwater Incredible String Band Bert Sommer Tim Hardin Ravi Shankar Melanie Arlo Guthrie Joan Baez

The dropouts They had originally had a lot of big name bands in there line up more than they already did. One of the bands that they had asked to perform for them was The Beatles. The guys had also asked Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, The Byrds, The Moody blues

Aftermath At the end of the festival there was reported two fatal deaths. There was also two births reported at Woodstock. They had asked Max if they could have another concert on his farm again, but he had denied them for a year so he could recover his farm. About 250 from a waste-disposal had to go around the 600 acre farm and put the trash by hand and recycle all of it.
