Ocean acidification By: Kayden and Hailee

What is it? Ocean acidification refers to a reduction in the pH of the ocean over an extended period time, caused primarily by uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.

The cause It is increasing amount of carbon dioxide in the oceans that is causing ocean acidification. When carbon dioxide enters the ocean, it combines with seawater to produce carbonic acid, which increases the acidity of the water, lowering its ph.

The effects Some species of calcifying plankton that are threatened by ocean acidification form the base of marine food chains and are important sources of prey to many larger organisms. Over a 10 year spam

Areas affected Ocean acidification is worse in the tropics such as the Caribbean and Pacific oceans because of humans.

Steps to decrease it Know what not to put down your drains. Join a beach or underwater clean-up group. Carpool for less pollution Keep your boat clean
