Types of Conflict Character vs. Character (Man vs. Man) Man vs. Nature Man vs. Society Man vs. Self Man vs. Technology

Conflict: Character vs. Character -or- Man vs. Man This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with another character, human or not human. In The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Charlotte and Captain Jaggery literally struggle to the death.

Conflict: Character vs. Nature -or- Man vs. Nature This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with the forces of nature, which serve as the antagonist. In Greyling, Greyling dives into the sea to save his father from a storm.

Conflict: Character vs. Society -or- Man vs. Society This type of conflict has the main character in conflict with a larger group: a community, society, culture, etc. In The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Charlotte “battled” against the rules of society expected for young girls of wealth in the 1820’s.

Conflict: Character vs. Self -or- Man vs. Self In this type of conflict, the main character experiences some kind of inner conflict. In A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is forced to face the consequences of his attitude and actions. After facing his life, he chooses to make a dramatic change in his outlook.

Conflict: Man vs. Technology This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with man-made machinery or “artificial intelligence”. In Hatchet, Brian struggles to fly and land a Cessna plane. He’s never flown before and the airplane’s fuel won’t last forever…
