Essay Question How effective is the opening chapter of “Wuthering Heights”? What smaller questions would you need to answer in order to answer this big question? You should include in your essay some comparison to your wider reading (e.g. “The Mayor of Casterbridge”).

Successful Essay Structure Introduction Address the question (How will you answer it) Overview of whole novel and how character/theme fits in. Overview of context. Development DETAILED analysis using CQA/PEE throughout. Consciously include linguistic & literary terminology. Use the cone to ensure appropriate approaches used. Make at least 10 different points about the character/theme and develop each one with close reference to the text. Conclusion Summarise your argument. Give your personal opinion. Refer back to the question and try to answer it.

Group Discussion: Chapter 2 Discuss and make notes on the following (be prepared to share your ideas with the class): Identify the light-relief that Lockwood as narrator brings to this chapter. What else is revealed about his personality? What contrasts are made between Lockwood and the inhabitants of Wuthering Heights? What contradictory elements are revealed in the character of Hareton Earnshaw? How is suspense built up in this chapter?

Group Discussion: Chapter 3 Discuss and make notes on the following (be prepared to share your ideas with the class): What elements of the supernatural are apparent in this chapter? What do we learn about Catherine? What do we learn about Heathcliff? What part does religion play in this chapter (lexis)? Track the use of heaven/hell imagery. What effect does it have? How is it used? What is the significance of the dream? Narrative structure – how is this used here? How is mood and atmosphere created?
