gENERATIONS What is a generation? A generation counts the years between the births of each parent and child. Why does it even matter that we learn about our generations? As a society, we do not all communicate the same. With that in mind, we want to be able to distinguish the differences and learn to communicate with each other in the workplace and in college. This includes marketing, the message we are trying to get across, needs, preferences, and (or) characteristics.

Distinguishing differences The GI Generation Also known as greatest generation or swing generation Born between 1901-1924 That are retired individuals in our society Raised during the Roaring Twenties Came of age during the Great Depression and World War II (with D-DAY) Invented vaccines, built suburbs, launched moon rockets, standardized k-12 school system, and laid out interstates A generation of extraordinary educational success and hoped to instill education progress in the future generations Believed in trusting schools, respecting teachers, and national progress so reminds others of that idea

GI Generation

Another generation The Silent Generation Also known as the luck or fortunate generation Born between 1925-1942 This generation is also known as the lost generation due to the lack of purpose after the war ( the death they all witnessed and so they were considered aimless, reckless, and not focused on material things) Children of the Great Depression and World War II Civil Rights Advocates, free spirits, and helped create diversity

The silent generation

Going on the 3rd one The Baby Boomer Generation There were babies born from WWII (military returning from war result) Born between 1943-1960 Today’s most experienced teachers, principals, and political leaders Indulged children Kennedy and Martin Luther King assassinated during this generation Community spirited progress encouraged Coming of age during Woodstock Vietnam War protests Post Watergate generation Culture career seekers Became active, supportive, and hovering parents College became an essential destination for their children

Baby boomer generation

The learning Process Generation X Also known as baby busters because of decrease in birth rates or the lost generation Born 1961-1981 Survived a hurried childhood of divorce, full time working parents (1st generation with latchkey kids), and open classrooms (no dividers, teachers teaching different subjects in one room) Learned at a young age that they were on their own (this included schools watching out for their best interest) When it came to politics, they leaned toward pragmatism and nonaffilation Considered “free agent” risk takers, trusted the marketplace, and a generation of entrepreneurs What does pragmatism mean? Pragmatism: a practical approach to problems and affairs

gEN X CONT… Considered “free agent” risk takers, trusted the marketplace, and a generation of entrepreneurs As school achievement was said to be mediocrity, teacher pay was being lowered dramatically As parents, determined not to let children experience the same problems they encountered Have been the most vocal for school reform standards, transparency, accountability and a parent’s choice

My generation The Millennials Also known as Generation Y Born between 1982-2004 1st generation that children have schedules Are entering entry level positions now Often raised in dual income families Stigmatize the “hands off” parenting styles Largest, most diverse generation in U.S. Politicians began to define adult issues and how they effect their children Began gearing things with the term “children friendly”, student achievement on the rise Children of divorced families Make about 20% less than their parents did Three quarters of Millennials have an account on a social networking site, compared with only half of Generation Xers and less than a third of the Baby Boomers.
