In your own words, define or explain science Turn in the about me sheet and lab safety contract into the box

Science is….. What are some characteristics of science? What do you think of when something is scientific?

Discovery of Penicillin What is penicillin? As you watch the video.. (https://youtu.be/0ZWjzcsTd5M) Think about your own definition of science Think about how the video demonstrates some misconceptions about science

Science is… How would you adjust your definition? Why is science often taught as specific steps in elementary and middle school? What is harmful about this?

Essential Vocabulary In this class, instead of thinking about science as a set of steps, we will focus on essential ‘experimental design’ vocabulary These are the components that will need to be included in an answer when you design an experiment

Design an Experiment- Bacteria Growth Fill out the outline with your group Incorporate all the essential vocabulary we used.

Lab Set Up Petri dishes with LB agar (bacteria food) Swab a surface in the room, swipe onto petri dish (gently) as directed Place in chosen environment factor Questions: What is your independent variable? How will you measure data quantitatively? What is your control group?

Essential Vocabulary Review Independent Variable- the variable you manipulate Dependent Variable- the variable you measure Control group- the ‘normal’ group used for comparison Experimental group- the group exposed to your variable Constants- all other variables that remain the same Hypothesis- a proposed explanation for your predicted results

Exit Ticket Explain the importance of a control group in an experiment (answer this on a scrap ½ sheet of paper- make sure your name is on it!) Turn it into the box
