In the Vega Baja, the historical record contains references of damaging events reaching EMS98 intensity VIII reported at Orihuela (the most important nucleus of population in historical times) in the years 1048, 1482, and 1673. The strongest in the region occurred in 1829 and it is known as the Torrevieja earthquake, on March 21, 1829. This is the main shock in a seismic sequence of at least 42 events occurring from 1828 to 1830 with EMS98 intensities reaching IX–X. During the instrumental period (early in the 20th century) the strongest event was the 1919, mbLg5.2 Jacarilla earthquake. Area 3 Vega Baja

1164 buildings seriously damaged Lorca population of around 90,000. Nearby towns and provinces not seriously affected. Huge shock in the whole country. The only fatalities from earthquakes in the 20th century in 1956 (11) and 1969 (4). Only one building collapsed. About 1164 were seriously damaged. Damage concentrated in several areas where around 40% of buildings were damaged. In the historical centre 16% of buildings were damaged. Historical heritage severely affected, including old churches and medieval wall towers.
