Influence on culture Your culture will have an impact whether strong or not on how you communicate with others. No matter how strong it is you must respect and the culture of your colleagues the same way they respect yours.

Influence on beliefs Beliefs are formed by the adults which surrounded you during your upbringing, They will affect the way you feel about yourself and others, Having strong beliefs does not mean that you can disrespect that of others.

Past events Those can have a positive or a negative influence on you. You must be aware of the of these when working in social care and ensure that they do not affect your professional practice.

Socialisation Socialisation is part of your development and something which everyone goes through.

Environmental influences The environment in which someone is brought up will influence access to health and social care provision. Things such as money, social class, or area of residence will greatly affect what is accessible to an individual. Regardless of these characteristics you must ensure that everyone gets the same level of care.

Health and wellbeing Our health and well being influences the way we develop. How we are seen by others and how we feel about ourselves. The way we view ourselves can also influence the way we may attach labels to individuals on the basis of their appearance, health or social status.

Developing greater self awareness and tolerance of differences It is crucial for health professional to be aware of the way they view themselves and others, Health professionals must be able to demonstrate tolerance and be prejudices free.

Committing to the care value base As a health professional it is essential that you are fully committed to the care value base and abide by it in your working life. You need to ensure that you understand and fully embrace the guidelines and rules prescribed with regards to caring for others.

Careful use of language Your use of language essentially forms part of the core value base which lies at the heart of health and social care, You need to be aware of the language you use when talking to a service users, as well as being aware of any difficulties with regards to language, You need to ensure that each person that you care for is fully aware of the treatment which they will go through as well as the options which are available to them throughout their care.

M3/D2 tips In order to achieve your Merit and Distinction , you will need to consider several difficulties which may arise when implementing anti-discriminatory practice in health and social care settings. You will also need to consider how and why any difficulties encountered might differ in different setting. You will also need to explain how you would resolve the difficulties in order to meet organisational policies and procedures.

One difficulty which may arise when attempting to implement anti-discriminatory practices is the ability for practitioner to commit to the care value base. In case study one within the renal ward of an hospital, Ron’s lack of understanding of the care value base aspect of promoting dignity is creating a difficulty as he is choosing to wash a service user without first checking their preferences. One way in which I could as a staff nurse promote the importance of the care value base to Ron, could be through recommending further training or shadowing which will enable Ron to learn the key aspects of practice and contribute to the prevention of discriminatory practices such as restricted opportunities. This will ensure that all clients within the renal ward are provided with the opportunity to voice their choices and preferences with regards to their care.
