The American Civil War The Victorian Period The American Civil War was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union The Victorian Period The Victorian era of British history was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from 20 June 1837 until her death, on January 22, 1901.

Authors Honoré de Balzac Born - May 20, 1799 Died – August 18, 1850 In his poems he expressed the idea that characters come to life through the painstaking accumulation of environmental details

William Dean Howells Born – March 1, 1837 Died – May 11, 1930 Howells wrote volumes of fiction of his own and was an unqualified success in that regard

Henry James • Born – April 15, 1843 • Died – February 28, 1916 • Henry James was most skilled and accomplish practitioner of Realism in fiction

The style of realism The writing of realism is exactly what it sounds like. It pays attention to the detail and an effort to replicate the true nature of reality in a way that novelists had ever attempted. Realism refers to the attempt to represent familiar and everyday life situations. • The stories, or plots, were simple and were secondary characters. The characters tended to be from the lower or middle class and spoke as people really did.

The works Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady was about a spirited young American woman. She inherits a large amount of money and becomes the victim of Machiavellian scheming by two American expatriates. Its theme is personal, freedom, responsibility, and betrayal.

The works Samuel Clemens's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is about a poor kid whose dad is an abusive drunk. He runs away and soon after he meets another runaway that was escaping slavery.

The works Horiore De Balzac's Le Pere Goriot was about changes to the French society. Which was the struggle by individuals to secure a higher social status.
