12/4/17- 12/5/17 BELLRINGER: QUANTUM MECHANICS REVIEW WORKSHEET YOUR NEXT QUIZ ON QUANTUM THEORY/ ELECTRON CONFIGURATION IS ON: 12/11 (A) OR 12/12 (B-DAY) TUTORING IS OFFERED AFTER EVERY B-DAY! HOMEWORK: ELECTRON CONFIGURATION WORKSHEET
Electron Configuration Ms. Donis Chemistry 1
Quantum Numbers (P.A.M.S) Principle Quantum Numbers (n): number of shells Angular Quantum Number (l): type of orbital (s, p, d or f) S orbitals can hold up to 2 electrons P orbitals can hold up to 6 electrons D orbitals can hold up to 10 electrons F orbitals can hold up to 14 electrons Magnetic Quantum Number (ml): orientation of the orbitals Spin (ms): spin of the electrons
Electron Configuration Electron Configuration: refers to arrangement of the electrons around the nucleus, and that tells us about its reactivity Example: Sodium reacts with water to produce explosions/fire
How do we write Electron Configurations? The number of shells that an atom has corresponds to the the periods in the periodic table. Example: Sodium (Na) is in period 3, so it will have 3 energy shells (n=3)
How do we write Electron Configuration? The periodic table is separated by sections that contain specific types of orbitals. Electron Configuration is cumulative
How do we write Electron Configuration? Examples: Hydrogen (1) contains a 1s orbital Sodium(11) contains: 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s orbitals Rubidium (37) contains: 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p, 5s orbitals
Electron Configuration Notation Determine the number of electrons your atom has. Ex: Potassium has 19 electrons Determine the number/type of orbitals your atom will have. Ex: Potassium will have: 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s orbitals
Electron Configuration Notation 3. Start filling up the orbitals with the corresponding electrons. (i.e. s= 2, p=6, d=10, f=14) 1s- will hold 2 electrons 2s- will hold 2 electrons 2p- will hold 6 electrons 3s- will hold 2 electrons 3p - will hold 6 electrons 4s- will hold ONLY 1 electron
Electron Configuration Notation Because Potassium only has 19 electrons, that last 4s orbital will be half full. 4. Write the correct electron configuration 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s1 *Superscripts correspond to the electrons
Electron Configuration Notation Electron Configuration Sublevel Diagram: an alternative to the periodic table. This is a great diagram to know for your next quiz/exam
Electron Configuration Notation Examples: Write Electron Configuration for the following atoms: Copper (Cu) Nickel (Ni) Cesium (Cs)

Noble Gas Notation This is another method of representing electron configurations of noble gases. Noble gases are elements in the last column of the periodic table. They are really stable and have electrons in their outermost orbital.
Noble Gas Notation Correct Noble Gas Notation is: [Noble gas preceding the atom] valence electrons
Noble Gas Notation Example: Potassium 1s22s22p63s23p64s1 [Ar] 4s1 Argon has one valence electron on the 4th shell
Noble Gas Notation Example: Silicon 1s22s22p63s23p2 [Ne] 3s23p2 Silicon has 4 valence electrons on the 4th shell
