Questioning Part 2 February 22, 2016

Norms Equity of Voice Active Listening Respect for All Perspectives Safety and Confidentiality Respectful Use of Technology

Objective You will be able to present and critique effective questioning strategies through group discussion and reflection.

Think/Pair/Share What was 1 questioning technique that you tried in your classroom? How did the students respond to this technique? Be prepared to demonstrate your technique with the whole group

Showcase Your Technique Each one of you will demonstrate your questioning technique with our group. It can either be in your content area or general.

Questioning Techniques Bloom’s Higher Order of Thinking APPLE strategy

Bloom’s Higher Order of Thinking Level 1 Remembering What is…? Who was it that…? Level 2 Understanding Can you explain why…? Write a brief outline of… Level 3 Applying Do you know of another instance where….? Can you illustrate….? Level 4 Analyzing What events could not have happened? Can you distinguish between…? Level 5 Evaluating Can you defend the character’s position about…? Why did the character choose…? Level 6 Creating What would happen if…? What is your opinion of…?

Questioning Techniques “APPLE” Ask the Question: Questions should be prepared in your lesson plan in advance. Pause: Let the learners think about what you are asking. Give the learners 3-5 seconds to think prior to getting a response.

Questioning Techniques “APPLE” Pick: Pick on a learner by name to answer the question. Do not always pick on the first learner that raised his hand. Remember to ask the question first and then call the student by name after.

Questioning Techniques “APPLE” Expound and Explain the learner's answer. Generate a dialog based on the learner's response. If the learner's response was incorrect, redirect the question back to the other learners. "That's an interesting response, but not the one I was looking for. Student B, can you help expand on this answer."

Questioning Techniques “APPLE” Listen: Listen to the answer, make eye contact with the learner, provide effect words* when the answer is provided. Mix your effect words, nothing sounds more phony than an instructor that always says "very good" whenever a learner answers a question. *Praise and/or encouragement words

Closure Write 3 questions using the techniques discussed today, that you will use this week in your classroom Be prepared to share with your partner and the whole group
