The Richardson Institute for Peace Studies Ministry of Defence Project M.o.D ‘The effect of ISIL on Iraq, Syria, the Kurdish region, Jordan and Turkey with relation to Displaced Peoples’

Aims and objectives Aim: to analyse and understand the impact of Daesh on several key regional actors (Iraq, Jordan, Kurdistan and Turkey) Objectives: i) to produce short and long reports for the Ministry of Defence and poster presentations for the RI Annual Poster Conference ii) to examine the impacts on the economy, internal displacement, regional refugee migration, state and societal security and the environment and resources and iii) to compare and contrast the problems faced by these countries

THE ministry of Defence UK UK government defence services; Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force Protecting the security, independence and interests of the British public at home and abroad Aim to ensure the highest level of training, equipment, strategic intelligence and online security Recent focus over the last few years is to ensure safety against terrorist threats at home and abroad

Research Very sensitive piece of research Minimal direct contact with MoD – mainly through coordinator Highly statistical piece of research to support and reinforce the serious reality of this kind of research Using appropriate and legal channels for research on Daesh or any terrorism-related research within academia E.g. Wiki-leaks, to be avoided for the MoD research Keeping research restricted to members in our group at the early stages, until the final project is complete

Conclusion Highlighting the similarities between neighbouring countries experiencing similar problems helps with opening dialogue between affected states Dialogue ensures more consistent and effective policy It encourages greater trans-national relations to create a unified front in combating Daesh Success: MoD used our research to aid their own projects Subsidiaries from the Swedish government wanted our report for statistical data on the refugee situation
