Life for African-Americans Slaves were brought to colonies from West Africa. West Africans traded people (slaves) for cloth, guns, and rum to colonists. Slaves were put on ships which sailed across the Atlantic – harsh conditions, very crowded, little food/water, many died on the trip = called the MIDDLE PASSAGE. Slavery was a horrible life. Some slaves rebelled by running away but most were unsuccessful.
Section 6: Religion Puritan church services were the most important part of life. *People’s houses would be searched to make sure everyone was at church *Assigned seats at church gave best seats given to older, wealthy people *Services could be 5 hours, with a break for lunch The Great Awakening: preachers felt as though people had lost religious faith, so traveling preachers went from town to town holding “revival” meetings. They delivered fiery speeches to huge crowds. Great Awakening’s effects: helped spread the idea that all people are equal in the eyes of God, it helped pave the way for the American Revolution
Section 7 Education New England – formal education. Learn to read to read the Bible. 1647 – law passed for towns (50 or more families) to hire instructor. Towns with 100+ families had to build a school. Parents contributed food, firewood, money, or anything they had for the school. Land was set aside to rent out to raise $ for teachers’ salaries Middle – religious groups had to decide for themselves how to educate children. The religious differences slowed the growth of public schools Southern – no established form of education. Wealthy hired a tutor, sometimes families joined to hire teachers. Poor=no education
Section 8 Families Families usually had many children b/c so much work needed to be done, and many kids died infancy Life expectancy wasn’t long, and usually a surviving spouse remarried – blending lots of kids between the families. Extended families often lived together when the elderly couldn’t take care of themselves anymore.
Section 9 Leisure Frequently lots of people got together to complete a task. The gatherings were called “bees.” Men would work to build a house or a barn and the women prepared food. They would also work to clear land (chopping bees) Women would work together to sew quilts Lots of games were played by everyone Towns had fairs – games of skill, dance contests, and food
