Whats new in Pest Control? Whats changed in the last year?

Organo Phosphates Diazinon no longer being produced. Orthene label reduced. Last year of Dursban production for Pre-treatment.

Synthetic Pyrethroid Trying to fill the void left by OPS. Replacing OP Turf uses. Still concerns in Termite work over repelling insects. Bifenthrin claims non-repellant to ants.

Chloronicotinyl Imidacloprid Premise / Merit New U of Fl Testing, shows infested zone treatment effective against termites. Controlling hard to kill Turf Insects: Grubs and Mole Crickets. Still waiting on Granular and Foam products.

Pyrrole Chlorfenapyr Phantom Has not reached its potential on Termites. Very exciting indoor ant control.

Pyrazole Fipronil Termidor, FireStar, Choice, Top Choice. #1 for Termites, with less than label treatments. Outdoor ant control showing very good results.

Pyrazole Fipronil Fire Ant Labeled Bait. Used in Golf Course for years on Mole Crickets. Home turf labels, limited by Water and Scrub-Oak Habitats in Florida.

Cellulose Formulations Chlorpyrifos and Permethrin Extends residual of product and allows lower percent of AI to be used. Most promising on Pine Boars. Cellulose formulations binding to bark? Research is not completed on this.

Boric Acid Ant Baits We are reaching saturation on these products. New ones appear several times each year it seems. They continue to be registered at about 5% Boric Acid. This is too high for good ant control.

Boric Acid Ant Baits.5% to 1% seems to have much better results. Liquid formulations are more popular, as they can be diluted to this range with different flavors, adding to the attractiveness of the bait. But bottom line is: if ants will take it, it will work to some extent.

New Vikane Label

Label Changes Use Site List Added shipping containers For use in dwellings (including mobile homes), buildings, construction materials, furnishings (household effects), shipping containers and vehicles including automobiles, buses, surface ships, rail cars and recreational vehicles (but not including aircraft).

Label Changes First Aid Statement Revised First Aid Statement Hold eye open and rinse slowly and gently with water for minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present, after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing eye. Call a poison control center or doctor for treatment advice.

Label Changes General Information Clarified direct supervision requirement... two persons trained in the use of the product, at least one must be a state licensed/certified applicator, must be present during fumigant introduction, reentry prior to aeration, and initiation of the initial aeration procedure.

Label Changes Preparation for Fumigation Deleted fish as a pet to be removed from the fumigated structure Remove from the structure to be fumigated all persons, domestic animals, pets, and desirable growing plants.

Label Changes Preparation for Fumigation Added tobacco products to the list of items requiring special attention as part of the structural fumigation preparation Food, feed, drugs (including tobacco products), and medicinals (including those items in refrigerators and freezers) can remain in the structure if they are in plastic, glass, or metal bottles, cans, or jars with the original manufacturers air-tight seal intact. Food, feed, drugs (including tobacco products), and medicinals (including those items in refrigerators and freezers) not in plastic, glass, or metal bottles, cans, or jars with the original manufacturers air-tight seal intact, need to be removed from the fumigation site, or double-bagged in Nylofume bags... ® Trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC

Label Changes Preparation for Fumigation Added sections describing multi-unit and connected structures When fumigating a single unit/room within or connected to a larger structure (such as town houses, apartments, condominiums) all units of the entire structure must be prepared as a fumigated structure, and all applicable rules, regulations and label instructions apply, such as occupant notification, structure preparation, posting, securing and aeration…

Label Changes Preparation for Fumigation Added sections describing multi-unit and connected structures (continued) A connected structure is defined as any structure connected with the structure to be fumigated by construction elements (e.g pipes, conduits, ducts, etc.) which may allow passage of fumigant between the structures. Any connected structure must be vacated during the fumigation process unless it is isolated from the structure to be fumigated by methods which prevent passage of the fumigant from the structure to be fumigated into the connected structure…

Label Changes Preparation for Fumigation Cited correct regulation for fumigation of surface ships in port The professional fumigator and the ships captain (or owner) shall follow all applicable regulations including those listed in the Coast Guard, DOT, Title 46 Shipping, section Parts 147A.1-147A.43.

Label Changes Preparation for Fumigation, Securing Structure Entrances Added text to clarify section To secure the structure against unauthorized entry during the fumigation exposure period and Step (2) of the Aeration Procedure 1 or 2, use a locking device or barricade on all exterior doors or doorways. A locking device or barricade must be demonstratively effective in preventing an exterior door or doorway from being opened using normal opening or entering processes by anyone other than the state certified applicator in charge of the fumigation or persons in his/her on- site direct supervision.

Label Changes Aeration and Reentry Added respiratory protection requirement for initial one-hour aeration procedure Note: During the initial one-hour aeration procedure, approved respiratory protection must be worn until the concentration of Vikane ® gas fumigant is confirmed not to exceed 5 ppm with an approved detection device. ® Trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC Vikane is a federally Restricted Use Pesticide.

Courtyards, Porches, etc. Do not enter unknown concentrations w\out the SCBA or a clearance device!!!

Label Changes Aeration and Reentry Added clearance device calibration requirements The Interscan gas analyzer must be calibrated within one month prior to use as a clearance device. All other approved detection devices must be calibrated according to manufacturer recommendations.

Label Changes Aeration and Reentry Specified step sequence of Aeration Procedures and total fan capacity Sequence for aeration procedures: Aeration Procedures 1 & 2: These steps must be completed in sequence. Total fan capacity, using one or more fans, shall be capable of displacing a total of 5,000 cfm. Michael Mornic/Mark Male - Orkin Exterminating

Label Changes Aeration and Reentry Added breathing zone measurements in each room After the minimum 6 or 8 hour waiting period, measure the concentrations of Vikane gas fumigant in breathing zones in each room. ® Trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC Vikane is a federally Restricted Use Pesticide.

Please refer to the new label for all the changes.

Pic Aeration Recommendation During your final walk-thru before releasing chloropicrin and Vikane, –Open all openings to attics and sub-areas –Make sure all internal operable doors are opened Includes closet doors, cabinet drawers, storage chests and appliances

Pic Aeration Recommendation During the 6-8 hours of passive aeration [step(2) of aerations procedures 1 or 2], Dow AgroSciences strongly encourage that fumigators incorporate the following enhancements for greater aeration efficiency………….

Pic Aeration Recommendation 1.Always fully open attic doors and direct a fan to blow up into this area. Open attic access door

Pic Aeration Recommendation 2.If the structure has window mounted or central heating and A/C, switch the fan (or blower) to ON. Fan Switch ON

Pic Aeration Recommendation 3.If you prefer not to change the equipment in the structure, place a fan in front of the furnace inlet to blow air into the central heating and cooling ducts.

Pic Aeration Recommendation 4.If ceiling fans or attic fans are available in the structure, switch those fans ON during the entire aeration period.

Pic Aeration Recommendation 5.If the structure has an attached garage, place a fan in the doorway of the structure blowing air INTO the garage.
