Presented by: Tara King & Hollie Schroeder Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) Presented by: Tara King & Hollie Schroeder

Why was it created? To serve lower socioeconomic countries with insufficient water supply, lack of electricity, and absence of conventional dental equipment Bring nervous and fearful patients to ease Help dental professionals achieve maximum oral health for all patients

Studies & Statistics The Study Statistics 2 Evaluations on success rate of 155 class I restorations on permanent molars FIRST EVAL: Postoperative sensitivity -2.7% sensitivity (97.3% success rate) SECOND EVAL: Durability at 12 and 30 months -91% (12 months) -79% (30 months) 95 Chinese children aged 5 & 6 93% no discomfort or pain during treatment 86% approved the technique & agreed on future treatment “Although developed for use in the less industrialized parts of the world, ART has now been accepted as part of the minimum intervention philosophy in developed countries,” said Mickenautsch and Yengopal.

High Strength Glass Ionomer Cement Materials Used Hand Instruments High Strength Glass Ionomer Cement

Procedure Steps Rinse and dry the tooth Infected dentin is removed with hand instruments GIC is placed GIC attaches to enamel & dentin by calcium bonding to the tooth’s minerals Sealed between GIC, enamel margin, & infected dentin that lines the cavity’s surface Use of finger pressure Thermo-cure for 60 seconds

Procedure

Advantages Provides less discomfort which decreases anxiety and fear level tremendously Eliminates the need for anesthesia, expensive and loud instruments, unnecessary removal of health dental tissue, & injury to pulp Helps with remineralization of tooth by releasing fluoride when bonded Low degree of wear Cost-effective after 2 years than amalgam restorations Rate of survival meets ADA qualifications Preventive treatment that can be done by other dental personnels
