What is a Restorative Approach? Restorative approaches (RA) – are a way of being which includes outlook and the day to day skills involved in preventing and pre-empting conflicts and harm. It builds and maintains relationships and community, as well as reacting/ responding when things go wrong1. 1 Adapted from Hopkins, B (2004) Allow participants to read. Trainer expand.

It isn’t just Restorative Justice We are governed by the Restorative Justice Council to ensure safe and best practice, the majority of our work is delivered around the prevention of harm rather than reaction to harm. We help give you the consistent ‘how’ to build and maintain relationships with tenants, between staff and communities

So what does a restorative approach involve? Very simple principles Lots of different tools and techniques

Lots of different tools and techniques One to one meetings Bringing two people together Complex and sensitive cases Empathic thinking Self awareness of thoughts, feelings and actions Non-judgemental Restorative enquiry I statements Empowerment of individuals Scaffolding rather than fixing Hard work High support AND high challenge Restorative Language Restorative Meetings Honest reflective and critical thinking . It is a chance to talk briefly about what is coming up on the 4/5 days of training.

Very simple principles Prevention 80% 20% BMR BMR = building maintaining and repairing relationships. Restorative approaches focuses on changing a culture to prevent harm rather than a set of tools to react to harm Reaction

The Four Choices Window – inspired by Wachtel. T, McCold The Four Choices Window – inspired by Wachtel. T, McCold. P, adapted by Hopkins, B and Vaandering. D Without To With challenge rules boundaries Punitive Restorative? Not For Try to give examples relevant to audience. The end goal is without, they can do it without your help – independence not interdependence. Which box is the participants default box when they are tired? Ask participants to share how they would feel in each box if you were managing them in that way? Neglectful Permissive support, care, nurture
