Note Cards and Parenthetical Citations The 9H Research Paper Ms. Bauer

Parenthetical Citations Parenthetical citations are in-text citations that prove where you found information in your paper and give credit to your sources You must use in-text, or parenthetical, citations each time you: Summarize information Paraphrase information Directly quote a source When in doubt, include a parenthetical citation.

Parenthetical Citations Known Author No Known Author Print Source: (Lastname Page). (Bauer 45). Web Source: (Lastname). (Bauer). Print Source: (“Article Title” Page). (“Cats” 67). Web Source: (“Article or Website Title”). (“Cats”).

Parenthetical Citations Rules of thumb: The citation ALWAYS comes before your end punctuation. Black cats are more likely to be magical (Bauer 78). If you mention the author’s name elsewhere in the same sentence, include only the page number. Bauer states that cats make great companions (61). When in doubt, cite.

Note Cards: An Overview A note card is an index card used to write down a single fact from a research source. Note cards help you organize the information that you intend to use from your sources. Each note card should: Correspond to only one of the sources on your Works Cited Contain just one fact or quotation Use complete sentences Include the parenthetical citation you would include in your paper

Note Cards: The 3 Types There are three types of note cards Paraphrase: a restatement of a short passage giving the same idea, but in your own words Summary: a brief synopsis of previously stated facts or statements Quotation: a direct quotation from a book, speech, article or other piece of writing

Example: Paraphrase Source: Bauer Page: 2 Note Card Number: 11 Cats are great companions despite their sometimes standoffish personalities, as they can intuit the emotions of the people around them. (Bauer 2)

Example: Summary Source: Bauer and Granger Page: 433 Note Card Number: 30 Overall, Bauer and Granger argue that while not all black cats are magical, black cats are more likely to hold magical significance than cats of other color patterns, as they have genes that are more evolved for the magical world. (Bauer and Granger 433)

Example: Quotation Source: Bauer Page: 2 Note Card Number: 18 “Dog-lovers should give cats a fair chance. They may be different, but they make fantastic companions.” (Bauer 2)

Note Cards: Your Assignment You need to have at least 25 note cards spanning between all four of your sources 5 Summary 15 Paraphrase 5 Quotation You may create your note cards using index cards, or you may use the note card feature on NoodleTools. If you use NoodleTools, you must type in your parenthetical citation into the note card! Your note cards are due on Monday 11/16! You have the rest of today and Friday to work on them. Bring your sources to class!
