Use Case: The GEO-Wetlands Community Portal Jonas Eberle, Prof. Christiane Schmullius (University of Jena) Adrian Strauch (University of Bonn)

Wetlands: Their value and their destruction Wetlands provide valuable ecosystem services Approximately 64% of the wetlands have disappeared since 1900 40% have been lost in the past 40 years Transport Fishing Hunting Flood control Carbon sink Biodiversity

SWOS User Requirements Workshop User-friendly satellite data discovery and access Availability search, downloading, pre-processing Data catalogue & data broker Include or reference to external data sources News-line to inform users on new datasets Simple visualization tools to easily explore available datasets Map production assistance & demonstrator for service cases, best practices Continuous updates of thematic products Coordinate with other portals

GEO-Wetlands Community Portal Objectives Provide an overview of free available satellite data* Simple access to pre-processed satellite time-series data* Wetland-related models (e.g., derivation of geospatial products and indicators), pre-generated or on-demand Provide a "knowledge hub" by collecting wetland-related data and information* Make external databases available for map comparison and validation purposes* *Can be supported by GEOSS!

Interaction with GCI Using GEOSS portal widgets to search for external datasets Requirements Pre-defined queries (e.g., wetland area, data sources) View metadata Add layers to map Provide same look&feel as on GEOSS (and maybe other community) portals

How can GEOSS support the user requirements? Search in external data sources (e.g., GBIF, ArcGIS Online) Satellite data discovery (e.g., Landsat-8, Sentinel) Coordinate with other portals But for end users we need to provide... Simpler data formats (e.g., export search results as CSV, Shapefile; graphical overviews aggregated by time) “Robust” and simple visualization tools (e.g., hide WMS link if server is down) Further data exploration notes (e.g., what can users to with the data found in GEOSS)

Example: Satellite data availability for Camargue

Conclusions Integration of GEOSS tools into portals is important Extend our own datasets with external resources Increase the visibility of GEOSS Reusing GEOSS portal widgets saves much time Need to focus on users requirements and needs of users Simpler satellite data discovery and access Map production assistance, tutorials, best practices, … Finally: Thanks to ESA for funding the widget development!
