Do’s and Don’ts for Coding TRAINING GUIDELINES Do’s and Don’ts for Coding

Coding: Significance Field Investigation Field Interviews Coding Before Starting Interview After Completing Interview State, PC, AC & PS Respondent Front Page Data Output Questionnaire Background Info Back Page

Coding the Questionnaires Before starting the interview enter the respondent number and location code on top of the boxes provided in the questionnaire. Put the serial number of the interview on top left of the questionnaire in sequence of the interviews done. Please record the time taken for completing each interview, which is to be noted at top of the questionnaire after its completion.

Coding the Questionnaires Always use a ball pen to encircle the answer variable in the questionnaire. The answer given by the respondent has to be recorded by encircling the appropriate answer category in the questionnaire. You must read the codebook and familiarize yourself with it before the fieldwork. If the question has 2-box code, and if 1 has to be entered, then enter 01.

Coding the Questionnaires Coding of the questionnaire to be done after completing the interview. Consult codebook for coding questions wherever mentioned. Open-ended questions are to be coded only after consulting the codebook. In case of any problem in coding, clarify with the supervisor or the coordinator for solutions.

Relationship of Coding & Analysis Transformation of Wrong Information into Data Collection of Information through Field Interviews Correct Coding of Questionnaires Transformation of Right Information into Data Valid & Reliable Data Output Incorrect Coding of Questionnaires Invalid & Unreliable Data Output
