Inertia.  Every object continues in a state of rest, or of motion in a straight line at constant speed, unless it is compelled to change that state by.

Station Activity Newton’s Laws Read the directions for each station demonstration. On a separate piece of paper answer the questions associated with each station. Everyone needs to answer their own questions.

Station #1 Hoop vs. Golf Tee Drop Balance the hoop on top of the flask. Balance the golf tee on top of the hoop. (place in same spot as coin in picture to the right) Challenge: Try to get the golf tee inside the flask without touching the golf tee. 1. Describe with words and a diagram your methods for completing the challenge. 2. Try to explain your observations using the terms of Newton’s 1st Law.

Station #2 Path of Marble Using the full plate, place the marble inside the inner rim and roll the marble. 1. Observe what happens to the marble and write down your observations using words and a diagram. Using the plate with the slice missing, place the marble inside the inner rim and roll the marble. 2. Observe what happens to the marble and write down your observations with words and a diagram. Using the ½ plate, place the marble inside the inner rim and roll the marble. 3. Observe what happens to the marble and write down your observations with words and a diagram.

Station #3 Tablecloth Remember seeing a magician pull a tablecloth out from under a pile of dishes? Was it magic or science? Challenge: Try to remove a table cloth from under dishes without moving the dishes on top. Describe your observations. 1. Does the speed at which you pull the tablecloth with have any effect on the experiment? 2. Does the type of object have any effect on the experiment? If so, in what way and why? 3. Does mass of the object have any effect on the experiment?

Station #4 Clay Challenge Balance the wire apparatus with two clay balls on top of your head. With the apparatus balancing on your head, spin around and face the opposite direction. Observe what happens to the clay as you spin around in a circle. 1. Does the speed at which you spin have any affect on the clay. 2. Describe your results based on today’s notes.

Station #5 Inertia Tiles Challenge: Stack the tiles on top of one another. Try to remove the bottom tile without making the other tiles fall. 1. Describe a successful way to remove the bottom tile to ensure the other tiles stay up. 2. Observe what happens when you remove the bottom tile.

Station #6 Penny Drop Take an index card and cover the top of the beaker. Place a penny on top of the card. Challenge: Try to get the penny inside the beaker without touching the penny. Be very careful and flick the card with your finger – to flick it out from under the penny. Try the experiment more than once. 1. Describe with words and a picture what happens to the index card and what happens to the penny. 2. Does the speed that you flick the card change your results?

Station #7 Tape Challenge Place the marble in the car and release the car from the top of the ramp so that it hits the book at the end of the ramp. 1. Observe what happens to the marble and write down your observations with words and a picture. Place the marble in the car and secure the marble with the tape. Release the car from the top of the ramp. 2. Observe what happens to the marble and write down your observations. 3. Describe how a seat belt makes you safer while driving in a car.
