An Overview of Response to Intervention RTI is the practice of: Providing high-quality instruction/intervention matched to students’ needs Using learning rate over time and levels of performance Making important educational decisions Each tier in RTI provides more intensive interventions © 2016 Taylor & Francis

Facilitating Effective Teams A good facilitator should: Know who to invite to the meeting Develop an agenda for the meeting Make sure everyone knows the time and location of meetings Establish the rules for the team process Be authentic Be capable of dealing with difficult people who are members of the team or interested observers © 2016 Taylor & Francis

Tier One Universal screening Assess for baseline Identify students who may need additional support Provide evidence-based instruction to all students Monitor growth Special education teachers provide support in Tier One problem solving team © 2016 Taylor & Francis

Tier Two The Pre-referral Process Pre-referral assessment Gathering data to determine a clear picture of a student’s specific strengths and areas of need Pre-referral interventions The team examines the target behavior, its cause and baseline, and identifies appropriate interventions © 2016 Taylor & Francis

Standard Protocol Versus Problem Solving a set procedure or standard protocol for which interventions are chosen Problem-solving approach tends to be more collaborative in nature and places more emphasis on identifying the factors that are contributing to the problem to determine interventions A hybrid approach may also be used © 2016 Taylor & Francis
