LLLDC Teachers…. Leaders and Learners There was an awesome conversation among the students as to what sentences to use for writing a one paragraph summary. There were a lot of meta-cognitive conversations. I have asked students for many years to summarize and pick out main ideas. I, now, feel much better about this since I have helped them by teaching them skills to be able to do it. Students seem to be more attentive when reviewing the material and taking notes in class. I believe they may have learned this the hard way in social studies and are better preparing themselves for the upcoming informational essay.

LLLDC Teachers…. Leaders and Learners Our students need to be able to use technology in our technological world. We have materials ready and in place for our module in the first two weeks. I am excited to begin my LLLDC adventure! I am using more graphic organizers and scaffolding to help facilitate students with note taking and outlining. The outcome has been an improved student product. Students just need to gain more confidence in their abilities, so that they will not hesitate when it comes to writing.

LLLDC Teachers…. Leaders and Learners I gave an assessment this week that went better than expected. I was hoping to see a little bit of improvement in the students writing compared to the pre-assessment and I saw more than a little improvement. Students are curious about being a part of LLLDC and seem motivated to participate. I think consistency with Social Studies will keep students involved and familiar with procedures, while setting high-expectations. This is a work in progress. Working with the student in the actual module is providing much needed insight.

LLLDC Teachers…. Leaders and Learners I have learned where my students are with reading and writing by the results of the survey and pre-test. This week we conducted an Abraham Lincoln Conspiracy mock trial in my classroom. The students were given both primary and secondary document sources as text. From this text my students were able to draw conclusions (deductive reasoning). My students organized the multitude of information using a graphic organizer. The graphic organizer assessed the ability to deduce important information from text. The Pre-assessment has shown me that my students will need practice with organization and thesis development. The Pre-assessment was very helpful for me to plan where to begin with them. I am going to have to very clearly communicate my expectations and work with them on organizing their writing.

Leaders and Learners Students have a better understanding of the concepts of text structure and author's purpose for a text Students are making comments that they are writing a lot this year, more than ever:) I am learning a lot! I feel more confident and able to teach these literacy components.

Our Goals Wednesday: Thoughtfully use feedback of peers, personal reflections, and student performance to make revisions to modules. Thursday: Practice scoring and analyzing student work with colleagues to develop inter-rater reliability and gain information to inform instruction and co-design process.

Student Work Send complete class set of pre-test and teaching task for every module that is a deliverable for every class period. Send selected samples OR class sets of work samples produced DURING the modules (for ex. mini tasks, graphic organizers, note-taking, Type 1 or 2 writing).
