Organic compounds All organic compounds contain the element carbon. Most organic compounds occur naturally only in living organisms or in their products. Most organic compounds contain hydrogen, and many contain either oxygen or/and nitrogen. Organic molecules are complex and large molecules. Organic molecules are made of a long chain of carbon atoms. Organic compounds are group into four groups: carbohydrates (sugar), lipids (fat) nucleic acids, and proteins. Examples of organic compounds are glucose, proteins, and fat.

Usually inorganic compounds do not contain carbon. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an exception. Inorganic compounds are made of a large variety of elements, aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), Sulfur (S), iron (Fe) Living organisms contain inorganic compounds as well as organic compounds. Inorganic molecules are simple and small molecules; they do not contain chain of carbon atoms. Examples of inorganic compounds in living things are water, carbon dioxide and salt.
