The jobs of tomorrow 2017 in words

How can parents influence this decision? Do you think they should? How did you decide what to do for a living? Who / What influenced your decision? How can parents influence this decision? Do you think they should? Did your job exist 20 years ago? In pairs, talk about what you do.

(Scan the codes for a description) 1 Match the jobs and the pictures. (Scan the codes for a description) a fashion designer an investment banker a social media manager a radio producer a data scientist a fashion designer 2 an investment banker 3 4 5 a data scientist a social media manager a radio producer

If your parents had to talk about your occupation, how well do you think they would do?

What can you say about the jobs of the future?

Watch the video and check if the sentences below are TRUE or FALSE. Most of the workforce will be comprised of people developing software. In the future, being successful will be more about adapting than anything else. The tendency is that jobs will be more mechanized. using humanized

Why do you think some current jobs are so hard for other generations to understand? “Nowadays anyone can have a unique job. Just anything superfluous can be the career of the future.” How do you react to this? “All the jobs that are going up in value are jobs where you’re relating to people as human beings.” Josh Bersin How does your (future) job fit in this tendency?

Talk about one thing you want to... THINK ABOUT THE YEAR 2017 List all you can remember happened in the world: movies, songs, tragedies, achievements, scientific discoveries, scandals etc. What about your life? Talk about one thing you want to... KEEP UNDO DO AGAIN FORGET

What’s the news? Check! named dictionary publisher 2017 “word of the year” dictionary publisher the English language Fake News

Match the words and the pictures CUFFING SEASON is the period of autumn and winter, when single people are considered likely to seek settled relationships rather than engage in casual affairs ECHO CHAMBER is an environment, especially on a social media site, in which any statement of opinion is likely to be greeted with approval because it will only be read or heard by people who hold similar views GIG ECONOMY is an economy in which there are few permanent employees and most jobs are assigned to temporary or freelance workers UNICORN is an imaginary animal that looks like a white horse and has a horn growing from its forehead ECHO CHAMBER 1 GIG ECONOMY 2 CUFFING SEASON 3 UNICORN 4

Talk. What is your favourite English word? Rank the three words you use the most in English. Which would you consider the word of the year in your own language? Talk about it.

Slide 5 – encourage BYOD practice in class, having sts use their QR code readers to read the job descriptions. Ask a st to come to the board, scan the first code, read the definition silently and then explain it to the others in his/her own words. Follow the same procedure for the other definitions, choosing different sts each time. Slide 8 – Elicit the correction of the false sentences. Slide 12 – Sts figure out the story. Show video to check. Slide 13 – Elicit the description of the pictures before showing definitions. Note that a unicorn is also a start-up company valued at more than a billion dollars, typically in the software or technology sector.

INFO As the year ends, a seasonal question recurs: what are the hottest new words? And every year, we pick up new lingo thanks to newsworthy people and events — but some stand out more than others. Perhaps unsurprisingly, The Collins Word of the Year 2017 — an annual campaign that gives "a chance to reflect on the words that have defined the last 12 months" — is "fake news.“ As defined by Collins, "fake news" means "false, often sensational, information disseminated under the guise of news reporting."
