Today we will… Complete a number of examination questions on Skills and Techniques. Assess our partners performance to improve our understanding. Make any note required to improve our own performance at each question.

Homework Feedback Choose a skill that was a weakness. How did this skill affect your performance? (3) Handstand Forward Roll Couldn’t do part of the skill e.g. lock arms This meant my body buckled under my weight. As a result I was unable to link handstand forward roll smoothly with the skills before and after it in my routine. I got less marks because of my poor performance.

Describe how you recorded information about your weakness. (3) Plan for answering data gathering questions… Name of observation schedule What did it look like? How did you fill it in?

Describe how you recorded information about your weakness. (3) I completed a Model Performer observation schedule for the handstand forward roll. The observation schedule broke the handstand forward roll down into subroutines. I performed the skill 3 times. After each attempt I watched a video of my performance. I placed a , a X or a ? beside each subroutine depending on how well I performed it.

Describe the steps you took to improve your performance in this skill or technique. (3) Broke the skill down and practiced it using gradual build up. The practices were… Stage 1. Donkey Kick Stage 2. Walk feet up wall Stage 3. Handstand against wall Stage 4. Handstand with support Stage 5. Handstand Forwards Roll We moved on when we performed the stage successfully 3 times in a row.

What changes did you see in your performance after a period of time My routine now contains more complex skills with high tariffs that are performed with control and fluency allowing me to gain a higher mark. Being able to perform the skill automatically allows me to perform it to a high level without thinking about it. This allows me to focus on forthcoming skills to ensure they are executed with control and fluency.

Choose two skills/techniques from gymnastics and explain why each is important for successful performance. Skill 1………….(2) Skill 2………….(2)

Skill 1 – Forward Roll (Rotation) Forward roll was used to link more complex skills in my routine together. This allowed my routine to flow more easily.

Skill 2 – Headstand (Balance) My headstand was important as it allowed me to contrast fast, explosive action (e.g. neckspring) with still balances. This demonstrated a change of speed.

Skill 3 – Neckspring (Flight) My neckspring showed a change of levels as I moved over apparatus. It is also a complex skill that gets me more marks if performed successfully.

Describe how you gathered information on a skill/technique that was a weakness in your performance.(3) I completed a Model Performer observation schedule for the handstand forward roll. The observation schedule broke the handstand forward roll down into subroutines. I performed the skill 3 times. After each attempt I watched a video of my performance. I placed a , a X or a ? beside each subroutine depending on how well I performed it.

Describe the problems you had when performing that skill/technique. (3) This can be answered in 1000’s of ways! An example…I didn’t lock my arms when I took my weight on my hands. This meant that I would buckle under the weight of my body. When I did manage to role out of my handstand I would sometimes struggle to stand up without using my hands.

Select two methods of practice from the list below and describe how they were used to develop your weakness. Gradual Build-up Whole-Part-Whole Repetition Practice Method of Practice 1………..(2) Method of Practice 2………..(2)

Gradual Build Up Gradual build up broke the skill down into smaller, simpler stages. The stages I went through were donkey kick, walk feet up the wall, handstand against the wall, handstand with support, handstand forward roll. I didn’t move on until I had performed the each stage successfully 3 times.

Repetition Practice When I became proficient (good) at the skill I repeated it over and over. This allowed me to ‘groove’ the skill and make it automatic. After each attempt my partner gave me a small piece of feedback to concentrate on for next time.

How did you use motivation or concentration or feedback when developing this skill? (2) I used feedback from my model performer observation schedule to create practices that would develop my weakness. During my practice I received verbal feedback from my teacher. I focused on developing this area during my next attempt. Praise built my confidence as I practiced.

What goals/targets did you set yourself when developing this skill/technique? (2) By breaking the skill down into smaller stages I had set myself small, achievable goals. My specific goals were…to lock my arms during the handstand and to reach forwards out of the forwards roll to stand up without using my hands.

How did developing this skill/technique improve your overall performance? (2) The handstand forward roll is a complex skill. My routine now contains more complex skills with high tariffs that are performed with control and fluency allowing me to gain a higher mark. Being able to perform the skill automatically allows me to perform it to a high level without thinking about it. This allows me to focus on forthcoming skills to ensure they are executed with control and fluency.

Now Complete the Self evaluation section of your Gymnastics Notes.

HOMEWORK Due Tuesday 11th November. How did you gather general data on your performance? Describe a skill you identified as a weakness in your performance. Describe the practices you used to develop your weakness. Why were these practices appropriate? Why was reaching the automatic stage in this skill beneficial to your whole performance?
