The Effects of Smoking and Second Hand Smoking Kylah Schumacher

Thesis Smoking in public should be banned because of the health problems from second-hand smoke, the negative kid influence, and the impact it leaves on the environment.

What Is Second Hand Smoke? A mixture of gasses and fine particles that include smoke from a burning product

What It Does To Your Lungs

Methods of Smoking Diseases caused by smoking Cigarettes Lung Cancer Marijuana COPD Hookah Strokes Cigars Emphysema Pipe Smoking Reproductive Effects In Women Diabetes Pneumonia Asthma Bronchitis Heart Disease

Kid Influence

How Are Kids Affected? 90% of adult smokers started when they were kids Studies have shown that children whose parents smoke are much more likely to smoke themselves The attraction to kids: to look cool, act older, seem tough or feel independent

Pollution To The Environment

What Does It Do? Most commonly discarded piece of waste worldwide 1.69 billion pounds of butts wind up as toxic trash each year Globally, 4.3 trillion cigarette butts litter the earth every year US accounts for 250 billion butts UK accounts fro 200 tons Australian smokers litter more than 7 billion butts every year

Did It Hurt Businesses? Many businesses thought it would hurt their business because they’d lose money Creating a smoke free environment helped the businesses “The Peanut Barrel” in Michigan thought for sure its doors would close, when instead it became a family friendly environment and made more money than ever before

Conclusion Overall, it’s a good idea for the government to keep the public smoking ban in place Second hand smoke harms children and adults, and the only way to fully protect nonsmokers and our environment is to eliminate smoking in all homes, worksites, and public places.
