Cell Division In eukaryotes, cell division occurs in two major stages.
Mitosis.  During mitosis, the chromatids on each chromosome are physically moved to opposite sides of the dividing cell with help of the spindle fibers.
Cell Replication. Binary Fission is how prokaryotic cells (bacteria) copy themselves. The DNA copies and separates, and the cell wall splits the cell.

Presentation transcript:

Mitosis Process by which the nucleus of the cell is divided into two nuclei; each with the same number and kinds of chromosomes as the parent cell

4 Stages of Mitosis Prophase Longest stage Chromatids seen Centromere connects chromatids Nuclear membrane disappears Spindles form and attach near centromere Appearance of chromosomes

Metaphase Shortest stage Chromosomes line up at the equator Microtubules connect Centromere of each chromosome to the poles of the spindle

Anaphase Chromatids separate at Centromere and move toward poles

Telophase Cell membrane pinches in half Nuclear envelope reforms

Cytokinesis Second stage of cell division Process by which the cytoplasm divides, forms two distinct cells Cell membrane pinches in half Two daughter cell are formed!!
