Mitosis: Mitosis is a type of cell division in which a daughter cell receives the same number of identical chromosomes as the parent cell. Mitosis is necessary.

9.2: Mitosis and Cytokinesis

Prophase The first stage of mitosis, the stage of mitosis during which a dividing cell spends most of its time.

Sister Chromatids Structures that contain identical copies of DNA.

Centromere The structure center at the center of the chromosome where the sister chromatids are attached.

Spindle Apparatus The whole structure, including the spindle fibers, centrioles, and aster fibers.

Metaphase The second stage of mitosis where the sister chromatids are pulled by motor proteins along the spindle apparatus toward the center of the cell and line up in the middle, or equator of the cell.

Anaphase The third stage of mitosis in which the microtubules of the spindle apparatus begin to shorten.

The last stage of mitosis in which the chromosomes arrive at the poles of the cell and begin to relax or decondense.
