English Research Design ‘Proposal’ By Ireneus Ariasa Tirtha (2820) Ivan Sastrawan (2838) Ni Luh Ayu Wandari Susanti (2811) Theresia Tiaranita (2804)

Background of Study English is very important in our daily life and it is getting more important because the people can go anywhere and to communicate with foreigner coming from different countries in the world and of course with different languages, because of that, we need English as a means of communication. Based of English skill, the structure is the important thing to study. Because by learn the grammar first they can speak with the other correctly.

Statement of Research Question In this study the researcher want to provide such empirical support as evidences. The researcher intents to examine this research question : “Can 3Ps Method be used to improve the students’ ability in Grammar for eleventh year students of SMPK Santo Thomas Aquino in academic year 2010/2011?”

Purpose of The Study The researcher expects that 3Ps Method will help the subject under study to improve their ability in learning English Grammar.

Limitation of The Study The limitation of this present study make the researcher easier to analyze the collected data, because the collected data just in area of Structure/Grammar used in eleventh year student in SMPK Santo Thomas Aquino Padang Tawang, such as : Simple Present Tense, Past Tense, and Future Tense.

Significance of Study This present study was aim at giving some contributions to the teachers, students and also to the researchers.

Significance of Study The subjects under study, that is, the eighth year students of SMPK Santo Thomas Aquino are assumed to have been practicing grammar ability both in EFL classes and outside the classroom setting. The subject under study are further assumed to have same strength of learning motivation. The English teacher of SMPK Santo Thomas Aquino are assumed to have similar teaching qualification in English.

Hypothesis On attempting to give a tentative solution to the problem, the hypothesis will be stated as following : The Students’ ability in Grammar can be improved through 3Ps Method.

Definition of Key Terms Five operational of the terms will be used in this present study. They are given in order to avoid misunderstanding of confusion on the part of the reader. The four key terms used in the context of this present study are structure/grammar form used in eighth year student, 3Ps Method, and SMPK Santo Thomas Aquino.

Definition of Key Terms The main Structure/grammar used in eighth year student are classified into three, such us : Simple Present Tense, Past Tense, and Future Tense. 3Ps Method (PPP) is a paradigm or model used to describe typical stages of a presentation of new language. It means presentation, production and practice. Students are engaged in the 3Ps Method during the classroom activities to improve their ability in learning English Grammar.

Research Design The present classroom action study makes use of classroom action research design. Thus, this classroom action study is concerned with teaching Grammar through 3Ps Method by using two kind of tests, that are initial refection or pre-test and reflection or post-test.

Subject of The Study The subject of this research are the eighth year students of SMPK Santo Thomas Aquino in academic year 2010/2011. There are about 28 – 30 students each class. The researcher will belong to class VIII A that consist of 28 students, with 15 females and 13 males.

Research Instrument Teaching Learning Scenario Teacher scenario will prepared in order to have description to what action to be conducted in the classroom. Achievement Test There is the several test used in study. All test will completed with exercises and tests, this includes pre test and post test.

Data Collection The process of collecting data will as follows : firstly, before the teaching will carry out the students will give the pre-test. This will conduct in order to find the initial reflection as well as to see the problem they faced. used in study. All test will completed with exercises and tests, this includes pre test and post test. Finally, in the end of every unit lessons, or after they give treatment that dealt with using 3Ps Method to improve their ability in Grammar, they will give a post-test to find out the result of the action.

Data Analysis The data then will analyzed in percentage as follows : ∑ X M = N

Data Analysis The computing formula above was adopted from Heaton (2003:3). The students’ achievement will calculated into the following criteria. Good : those students who are able to answer the test items between 70% - 79% correctly. Fair : those students who are able to answer the test items between 60% - 69% correctly. Poor : those students who are able to answer the test items between 50% - 59% correctly. Failure : those students who are able to answer the test items between 0% - 49% correctly.

Total number of the students choosing an item Data Analysis The percentage of each item being answered will transform into descriptive data through the following formula : Total number of the students choosing an item % = X 100% The sum of the total score of all item

Data Analysis The criteria are as follows: Score Qualification Fail 10 Fail 10 Very bad 20 Bad 30 Very low 40 Low 50 Almost Enough 60 70 More enough 80 Good 90 Very good 100 Excellent
