Improving Mt. Airy 2nd Grade Students AT or ABOVE the Benchmark for DORF Words Correct Per Minute Reading Station ______________________

BACKGROUND My students took DIBELS assessment in Fall. These were the DORF measure results. The majority of my two classes were BELOW or WELL BELOW the Benchmark of 52 words correct per minute (wcpm). By winter Benchmark students need to read 72 wcpm to be AT or ABOVE the Benchmark. Adopting an idea from another CPS QI Pioneer (power of our “All Teach, All Learn” weekly Huddle) I began testing a PDSA to increase my students’ fluency! 2017 Taylor Grade 2 Fall Benchmark Data from DIBELS.net

SIMPLIFIED KDD: AIM & DRIVERS HIGHLIGHTED DRIVERS AIM Safe, Trusting “All-Teach, All-Learn” School and District Environment Increase the percent of Ms. Taylor’s 2nd Grade students who meet or exceed MAP proficiency target and/or growth benchmarks from 55% (Fall ‘17 MAP Test) to 65% (Winter/Spring Map Test) by 5/31/18 Quality Instructional Delivery with Timely & Appropriate Interventions for ALL students

CHANGE WE ARE TRYING (PDSA)

CHANGE WE ARE TRYING (PDSA) Driver: Quality Instructional Delivery with Timely & Appropriate Interventions for ALL students TEST: Test the effectiveness of instructional practices (Cold & Hot Reads) on fluency growth Goal based on Q2 THRIVE 5, “I CAN READ TEXT QUICKLY, CORRECTLY & WITH EXPRESSION.” 5 step fluency strategy: Cold read, graph results, make a goal/prediction Teacher modeling & Students follow along Independent Practice Partner Readings (using Fidget Spinners as Timers) Hot read, graph results, discuss findings Adopted use of Fidget Spinners! Measure: Increase # of students (n = 21) reading between 20-71 wcpm on DIBELS DORF benchmark who increase at least 5-10+ wcpm on weekly Cold to Hot Reads for 3 out of 4 times out of a 8 week period! Results: PDSA Test Period from 10/23/17 – 12/6/17 Results | Will adapt TEST for future cycles After 5 weeks, 86% (18 of 21) students achieved at least 5-10+ wcpm on their Cold to Hot Reads!!! I will include more students in the next cycle.

Measures & Results Students are actively engaged in spinner partner reading! (This is the biggest + in the +/ responses!) Beginning of PDSA Cycle PDSA GOAL Students are continuously progress monitored with DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency. Cold/ Hot Read # # of Students with a 5-10+ wcpm gain 1 14 2 18 3 ??? 4 ???? Students graph their wcpm of cold reads in blue and hot reads in red!
