Your Coaching Programme About Me: Coach for 17 years Full time for last 9 years IC Tennis established to help with marketing and promotion of my work. Creating a brand Coach across two main clubs Tennis Scotland Tutoring on Teacher training courses Tutoring on University of Strathclyde IC Tennis Pro Shop Overview: About the next half an hour… Two clubs, aims and objectives, look at programmes, what should be in your coaching programme, importance of partnership working, successes, lessons I’ve learned, Happy to take questions as we go along, also opportunity at the end

Two Clubs…Two different approaches HLTC - small retainer, hourly rate for group lessons, profit share if programme makes more money - INCENTIVE Hamilton – on the committee and also work closely with them UBTC - pay rental for use of facilities and small area for pro shop Uddingston – work more independently There are other ways but not my place to say what would work for you? FEEDBACK…PROMPTS…THOUGHTS!!! Ask what the audience think are the advantages and disadvantages of both?

Central to Club Development Aims & Objectives Quality Coaching New Members Current Members Player Development Coach Development Generate Income Central to Club Development Summarise: Difficult to satisfy all of these – about getting a balance - What potential issues? E.g. court time Clubs will prioritise some of these aims but…. A key to any good club is a good coaching programme – very rarely will you find a poor coaching programme and good club

Here is what a typical week looks like for me Challenges of working across two clubs? Brief mention of successes – Junior Social Tennis, Tennis Tuesdays, Adult Beginner/Improvers – WILL EXPAND ON THESE LATER ON

Challenges working in an outdoor club over winter months? Brief mention of successes – school club links – WILL EXPAND ON THESE LATER ON

Your Coaching Programme Junior Coaching School Links Easter/Summer Camps Adult Coaching Social Tennis Open Days (GBTW) Special Events Partnership Working Prompt audience to come up with aspects of programme… School Links – Talk about Lunch Clubs/After School Clubs briefly Special Events – Social competitions (e.g. Davis Cup Competition, Christmas Pizza Night) Partnership Working??? Ask audience for example Internal – coach working with committee External – Tennis Scotland

Partnership Working Active Schools - Primary 4 Schools Competition First involvement…6 schools This year…52 schools took part Teachers from all schools trained 6 week course delivered to primary 4 pupils in all schools 4 kids (2 boys, 2 girls) go forward to play in the competition at the local club Both Hamilton and Uddingston hosted events Club SL Strong Club Links – lunch clubs mentioned before, sustainable because kids pay for this Subway - Sponsorship for Junior Social Tennis Local Subway stores are located close to Hamilton and Uddingston – funding for Junior Social Tennis Sessions in 2018 LEAD IN TO NEXT SLIDE…Some of you may be asking why all this is important why not just have your programme? The changing landscape….

Successes Junior Social Tennis School Links Tennis Tuesdays Adult Coaching Tennis for Kids Strong year round attendance Driving facility improvements

Lessons Learned Competition from other sports/activities? e.g. Hockey Club - Full time coaches working in schools, gave me a kick up the bum Changing committees – different priorities Re-evaluating personal situation – balancing family life with evening and weekend work Long term approach to reinvesting coaching revenues: marketing, outreach work, coaching assistants over the long term Never instant success and always takes time to establish and maintain classes/programme Diagram sums up what will what growing a coaching programme is like
