Acid Rain Nuclear Radiation River System Transboundary Pollution Chapter 16 Geoterms Acid Rain Nuclear Radiation River System Transboundary Pollution

Acid Rain Rain that contains dangerous chemicals because of smoke from cars and factories.

Nuclear Radiation A form of energy that comes from nuclear reactions. It has no smell or taste by it can be very harmful. Materials polluted with nuclear radiation are said to be radioactive.

River System A river and all the streams that flow into it. The streams that flow into a river are called tributaries.

Transboundary Pollution Pollution that starts in one country and crosses boundaries into other countries.

Read 16.3 and answer the following questions: 16.3: Read 16.3 and answer the following questions: Chernobyl became a source of radioactive pollution when its reactor had an explosion that released a radioactive cloud. One effect of the spread of radioactive pollution across the borders was that people outside of Ukraine had their food and water contaminated by radiation. Reactor changes help to reduce radioactive pollution by improving safety at nuclear power plants like making plants easier to shut down in an emergency.

16.4 The Black Triangle became a source of acid rain when… Factories and power plants in this area burned coal.

16.4 One consequence of the spread of acid rain across borders is… That places outside of the Black Triangle have sick trees and fish.

16.5 One consequence of the spread of water pollution across borders was… That outside of Romania, 200 tons of fish were killed, water systems were shut down, and tourists canceled trips.

16.5 International commissions… ________________________ help reduce water pollution by … International commissions… Having countries work together to prevent future spills.

Chapter 16 Processing Smog is caused by… The burning of fossil fuels in cars, trucks, power plants, and factories.

Chapter 16 Processing One consequence of smog spreading across borders is… That people outside of the area where the pollution is being created are affected with poor air quality.

Chapter 16 Processing _______________________ could help reduce smog by… Increased emission standards and alternative energy sources Reducing the amount of chemicals released into the air.

Test Review What was the major cause of the power plant explosion at Chernobyl? Brain Drain Human Error Extreme Cold Centrifugal Force

Which of these was the main pollutant released by the Chernobyl power plant explosion? Cyanide Nitrogen Oxide Nuclear Radiation Sulfur Dioxide

A map showing the spreading of radiation from the Chernobyl power plant explosion is best illustrating which of the following problems? General Pollution Non-Point-Source Pollution Toxic-Chemical Pollution Transboundary Pollution

Which of these is a major cause of acid rain? Spraying pesticides on crops. Burning fossil fuels for energy. Dumping sewage in river systems. Using uranium to generate electricity.

Which of these is not a direct result of acid rain? Damage to monuments. Dying Fish Spread of disease. Weakened trees. C. Spread of disease.

Power plants and factories in Europe’s “Black Triangle” are doing which of these to reduce acid rain? Switching to coal as a fuel Building taller smokestacks Stopping work on windy days. Installing smokestack scrubbers D.

How did the accidental spill of cyanide at a mine in Romania spread to neighboring countries? Winds blew the cyanide Rivers carried the cyanide Crops poisoned with cyanide were sold in other countries. Storms dropped rain poisoned with cyanide on other countries.

The Tisza-Danube cyanide spill is an example of all of the following except General Pollution Accidental Pollution Point-Source Pollution Transboundary Pollution A.
