Legacy Resources in the Research & Education Community Nikolas Pediaditis IP Resource Analyst TNC15 | Porto - Portugal | 15 June 2015

Essential Facts “One of the RIPE NCC's key responsibilities as a Regional Internet Registry is to keep the RIPE Registry correct, complete, and up-to-date” Keeping registration data current: Helps network operators to make better operational decisions Prevents resources from being hijacked General intro of what you are going to talk about.

Legacy Internet Resources Distributed before (or outside of) the current system of hierarchical distribution by the RIRs Have been kept outside any formal relationship between their holders and the RIPE NCC The RIPE NCC: Maintains and publishes registry data for resources held by members and legacy Internet resource holders Provides reverse DNS delegation and a routing registry for IP addresses and AS Numbers, both of which include legacy Internet resources General intro of what you are going to talk about.

Where You Come In Academic & research institutions were among the pioneers of the Internet in our region Big part of legacy resources reside within the R&E community Undocumented redistribution of legacy resources led to many legacy holders not being aware nowadays of the resources they hold Registration data is often out of date, making the resources vulnerable for hijacks General intro of what you are going to talk about.

Legacy Resources in the R&E Community 1,849 IP blocks 469 AS Numbers In total: 2,318 out of 4,730 legacy resources are within R&E General intro of what you are going to talk about.

RIPE Policy & Options The policy: Options for legacy holders: 2012-07 was implemented on September 2014 Establishes the principles to be applied in offering and implementing registry services for legacy holders Options for legacy holders: Register resources with their LIR (if already a RIPE NCC member) Become a member of the RIPE NCC Engage via a sponsoring LIR Engage directly with the RIPE NCC Choose not to establish a formal relationship with the RIPE NCC General intro of what you are going to talk about.

We‘d Like You to Remember… Protect against hijacking IPv4 addresses become more vulnerable as they become more scarce Hijackers try very sophisticated methods to obtain control over (apparently) unused address blocks Faking registration and identity papers. Faking entire websites and domains Good practice: Keep your data in the RIPE Database accurate and up-to-date If transferring resources, ensure you are in contact with a legitimate representative of the organisation For all legacy issues, get in touch with the RIPE NCC if you need help or have questions General intro of what you are going to talk about.
