Elementary Career Day My name is Wanda Gass/ Carolyn Tobin Who can guess what I do?

What do engineers do? Who knows someone who is an engineer? What are your duties at this job? Can you describe a typical day?

Engineer Our World Name something that you used today that was designed or created by an engineer. Name one thing that you used today that was not designed or created by an engineer. What would your life be like if there were no engineers? Frist click – give the students 60 seconds to answer the first question. Second click – give the 2 minutes to come up with something, then explain that everything we use everyday has been touched by an engineer. Third click – give the students 60 seconds to answer the last question.

What do engineers look like? What image comes to mind when you think of an engineer?

Fashionable Tufts University Do all engineers look like a Nerd? This is a group of engineers from Tufts University that worked together to design a car that ran on solar power. What kind of engineers would be needed for this project?

What education is needed? What education is needed for this job? What skills are needed for this job?

Engineering Degree High School College 4 years of math 4 years of science Good reading and writing After school activities College 4 years of college (Bachelor of Science degree) What if you like math and science but you are not very good at it? It is important to be able to communicate because engineers have to collaborate and work as a team. What kind of after school activities would be good to do? To be an engineer you need to to go to a four year college Many engineers get a Master’s degree, but it is not required.

What do I like most about engineering? Ask students to answer this question before you go to the next slide.

Why People Choose to be an Engineer Uses math and science and works with others to solve problems. Makes the world a better place (healthier, safer and happier).
