Aim #8: Did the philosophy of Legalism used by the Qin Dynasty improve life in China? October 23, 2017

I. Legalism in the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C. – 206 B.C) Qin Shi Huangdi founded the Qin Dynasty in 221 B.C., ended the Era of Warring States, and turned to the philosophy of Legalism to bring order to China. How did Legalism view human beings? How is this different from Confucianism? According to Legalism, what kind of power should the government and ruler have? How should the ruler keep his subjects under control? How do you think Confucius would have felt about this?

I. Legalism in the Qin Dynasty B. Examples of Legalism under Qin Shi Huangdi: 1. He united China under a strong centralized government → where power comes from a single source Which of these methods do you think would have been most successful in unifying China under a strong central government? Which of these methods do you think would have been least successful in unifying China?

I. Legalism in the Qin Dynasty 2. He used censorship and repression to control his people. What did the Qin Dynasty do to any books or historical records that came from before the Qin Dynasty or contained non-Legalist ideas? What did it do to any individuals (like Confucian scholars) who disagreed with the ideas of Legalism or tried to preserve non-Legalist texts? Why do you think the Qin Dynasty chose to do this? Do you think these policies did more to increase or decrease Qin Shi Huangdi’s power? Why?

Concluding Question Under Legalism, the people of China gave up many of their rights and freedoms in order to get a stronger, more stable government. Do you think this philosophy ultimately improved life in China? Why or why not?
