What is direct characterization? When the author clearly tells the audience what the personality or trait of the character is.

What do the witches mean when they say, “Fair is foul, and foul is fair”? - This could mean that things are not what they always appear to be. Good things might actually be bad and vice versa. - This could also mean that bad things are followed by good and good things are always followed by bad.

What does it reveal about this character’s personality? “Had he not resembled my father as he slept, I had done’t.” 2.2.16-17 Lady Macbeth said this quote and it means that she would have killed the king if he didn’t look like her father. This shows that she does have a soft spot.

Macbeth does murder sleep….Macbeth shall sleep no more.” 2.2.47-57 Macbeth said this quote. He either hallucinated voices or heard spirits that say Macbeth will not be able to sleep anymore. He must feel really guilty and is going crazy.

What does this reveal about this character’s personality? “My hands are of your color, but I shame to wear a heart so white.” 2.2.82-83 Lady Macbeth said this quote. She said her hands are red but she still feels innocent. This shows that she is heartless and cold.

The near in blood, The nearer bloody.” 2.3.164-166 Donalbain said this quote and it means that men are not always what they appear to be. It could also be that those closest to you are not trustworthy.
