Year 7 – PSHE Topic 7 Discrimination

To understand what discrimination is and why it occurs Learning Objectives To understand what discrimination is and why it occurs

Stand up if you have brown eyes Is this right? Does society judge All boys with brown eyes will take part in a fun activity for PSHE today. All other boys will be asked to sit in silence all lesson and then help clean the classroom after. Is this right? Does society judge people in similar ways?

Starter - What do the following words mean? – 2 Minutes Term Definition Prejudice The act of judging someone before you know them. Discrimination The act of treating someone unfairly because of prejudice. Stereotyping Assuming that everyone in a particular group is the same. Racism The act of treating someone unfairly because of their race. Race the defining of people according to a variety of factors such as language, culture and physical characteristics

Activity 1 \ Divide class in two. One side will write a word they associate with the idea of racism on one side a word they associate with respect. Read out your words.

Activity 3 – Group Activity ‘I Have A Dream’ You will now work in small groups to write and perform a speech. Think about the world you live in now and their dream for ways that their world can be made better. For example: I have a dream that everyone who uses our centre will enjoy it and we can all work together to improve our community

Plenary Final thought: Are words alone enough to change the world? 30 second speech on what you have learnt this lesson! The winner is the student who can talk for the whole time! 
