TONI Good morning and welcome. This presentation will take around 20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions at the end. The presentation is in 2 parts. The first is a summary of how Change4Life will be supporting stakeholders around the National Child Measurement Programme and the second is a round up of the 10 Minute Shake Up campaign. We will answer as many questions at the end as we can in the time available but apologies in advance if we are not able to get to yours. The slides and voice overs will be made available on the CRC along with an list of FAQs

Our Healthy Year It’s crucial that children learn from an early age about healthy eating and the importance of activity in their lives so they can carry this information on with them beyond primary school As part of our Change4Life programme, we have created Our Healthy Year to support NCMP , particularly with Reception and Year 6 children, but also with the whole school to help them to eat well, move more and live longer As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme. Measurement offers us an opportunity to develop the knowledge and behaviours of reception and year 6 children to prepare them to lead healthier lives. This initiative will therefore support and enhance the NCMP by providing timely and targeted Change4Life materials and messaging to stakeholders including parents, children, teachers, heads, local authorities and school nurses

Our Healthy Year Reception is a time when children are settling into school and forming new patterns, and parents are engaged and involved with school life Year 6 are particularly busy with stressful SATs reparation and experiencing the onset of puberty These are also the years when children’s height and weight is measured by school nurses as part of the NCMP Key times for children to engage with the important healthy lifestyle messages of Our Healthy Year As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme.

Creating a positive environment around the NCMP Headteachers Teachers Pupils School Nurses Local Authorities In school, the programme will be about creating a positive environment around measurement For head teachers supporting them to create a healthier culture within the schools with ideas for the whole school to get involved in as a backdrop to the measurement. For teachers this is curriculum linked teachable moments and creating visibility around the school with posters and wall charts For pupils this is take home certificates and stickers. These are likely to be linked to completing a related activity rather than the measurement itself Parents and Governors

Built On Insight Childhood obesity is not ‘their’ problem Overestimate activity, underestimate unhealthy eating Don’t perceive risk in some unhealthy behaviours Healthy living is seen as middle class Short term happiness is prioritized over long term health benefits As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme.

Built On Core Principles Prevention and health promotion – C4L aims to change behaviours that cause weight gain, rather than being a weight loss programme Provide motivation and support for families to make small but significant improvements to their diets and activity levels Provide more and better resources for families who have lower incomes, fewer skills and lower education levels Accessible to a wide audience: all web content is accessible; recipes are designed to be low-cost (typically under £5 for a family of four) and to require only basic cooking equipment. As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme.

Our Healthy Year Toolkits The Our Healthy Year toolkits provide teachers with ideas and resources to use with their classes over the course of a year (adaptable for a term, month or even a week) Ideas are simple and flexible and have been written to get children eating well and moving more Teachers can build ideas into their existing everyday routines throughout the year, or try the curriculum-linked activities over a whole year, term, month or week of healthy activity As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme.

Our Healthy Year Toolkits Linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and Early Learning Goals, and the Year 6 curriculum Ideas and activities adapted for a range of abilities and settings Helps schools meet statutory duties to promote children’s health and well-being, and help them understand how to keep themselves healthy (Ofsted School inspection handbook, personal development, behaviour and welfare) As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme.

Headteachers Our Healthy Year overview Ideas to engage the whole school Letters for Senior Leadership Team and Governors As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme. School Nursing Team Resources to explain measuring day to students and make sure children learn about healthy lifestyles after they've been weighed and measured. As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme. This initiative will therefore support and enhance the NCMP by providing timely and targeted Change4Life materials and messaging to stakeholders including parents, children, teachers, heads, local authorities and school nurses

Engaging Parents The importance of delivering the healthy eating and activity message goes beyond the classroom, so it’s vital to get parents involved as they are the ones who make most of the food and activity choices for children at this age Resources to tell parents about our healthy year and how they can get involved and support their children As I am sure many of you know, each year 1.1 million children in reception and year 6 are weighed an measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme. Measurement offers us an opportunity to develop the knowledge and behaviours of reception and year 6 children to prepare them to lead healthier lives.
