E.F.M. Study Guide Review C H G J D A E F I B Any push or pull on an object A scientist starts an experiment by first making a __. How fast or slow an object is moving. Any change in an objects direction. The total amount of force on an object. The force that is always pushing down on an object. The distance divided by time equals The point in which you observe an object Scientist measure force in this unit of measure. The measure of the amount of matter and gravity on an object. - A title - X axis label - Y axis label E.F.M. Study Guide Review A line graph needs what three things to be considered complete? Magnetism Magnetic Field: Magnetic Pole - A title - X axis label - Y axis label Scientific happening that causes items to repel or attract The force that is created outside of a magnet The “poles” or the edges of a magnet. There is a north and a south pole.

E.F.M. Study Guide Review 4. What is a variable in an experiment? 5. List the three different types of variables 6. How do magnets respond? N-N, S-S, N-S? A variable is a factor that will affect the outcome of an experiment. Independent – Purposely Changed Dependent – Measured or changes in response Controlled – Stays the same N-N – Magnets will repel S-S – Magnets will repel N-S – Magnets will attract

E.F.M. Study Guide Review 7. How can you increase magnetism? 8. What happens when you move further away from a magnet? 9. Where is the force of a magnet the strongest? You can increase the strength of a magnet by adding more magnets. This will increase the magnetic field. As you move further away from the magnet, the strength of the magnetic force decrease. The force of a magnet is the strongest at the magnetic poles.

E.F.M. Study Guide Review What is the name of the scientist that helped to identify gravity and when did he live? 3. Explain how balanced and unbalanced forces are used to explain Newton’s First Law of Motion. 5. What devices did medieval warriors use in battle. Uses? Isaac Newton helped to identify gravity and he lived in the 1600’s If the forces acting on an object are BALANCED, the object will stay at rest. It takes an UNBALANCED force to cause an object to go in motion. Warriors used the catapult in battle. They were used to attack castles and fortresses (IE High walls).

E.F.M. Study Guide Review 2. Define Scientific Law 4. What is Inertia? 6. What does Newton’s Second Law state? Scientific laws explain natural occurrences by using repeated experimental observations. An objects tendency or ability to resist a change in motion. Newton’s second law states that force is equal to mass times acceleration.

E.F.M. Study Guide Review Stored energy Energy that is in motion Potential Energy: Kinetic Energy: Gravitational Potential Energy: Work: Graphical representation: 6. What do scientists use to measure work? Stored energy Energy that is in motion Energy that an object has stored due to gravity Using force to move an object A graphic that represents mathematical data in the form of a graph or chart. Joules or calories
