HIGHER MUSIC Chords

Chords which you need to be able to recognise… Chords I IV V VI major/minor. Added 6th Dominant 7th Diminished 7th

Chord Progressions The easiest way to learn to recognise chord progressions is by singing the intervals. Here is a list of some songs to remember some intervals. 4th – Amazing grace 5th – Twinkle Twinkle 6th – Hush Little baby If you sing the first 2 notes of each of the songs it will give you the first 2 chords in the progression. Then you just need to figure out if it is going up or down from there.

Hooktheory.com Hooktheory is a fantastic resource for working out chord progressions and highlighting where certain progressions happen in songs. www.hooktheory.com

Added 6th Chord Listen for the lowest and highest notes you should be able to sing ‘Hush little baby’

Dominant 7th Chord b Sing the riff at the start of pretty woman in your head! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDVvZdZ_CLk Or listen out for the highest and lowest notes, sing the first 2 notes of ‘Somewhere’ from west side story in this key and they are the same notes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3mZY8mf2hU

Diminished 7th Chord b b b Flattened 3rd, 5th and 7th.
