Task Task: The staff at the Field Museum of Natural History is overworked and understaffed! They need our help! This dusty envelope of artifacts from an unknown culture was found tucked away in the basement of the museum. Your task as amateur archaeologists is to unlock the culture of this ancient civilization based only the primary sources you are given.

Description – write down what you see and include details What you can learn (you should come up with at least 2 -3 things per item)! Bullet points are fine HW – Finish Step # 3

Cataloging (Step 3) Example: Description: Artifact #1 is a letter that was written on paper to the king from a man named John Smith. What can be learned? (Why) From this letter, one could learn the possible type of government because the letter is written to a king. Location might be learned because John Smith also talks about “maple leaves.”

Step 4 Work on Step # 4 Prediction Artifact Evidence Justification Step # 4 will be worth 16 points – reading/writing grade 10 points – classwork (Steps 1, 2 & 3) Packet should be completed with a clear description & use 16 points – reading/writing (Step 4) Conclusions, Evidence (primary source) & Justify The location of this culture is Alaska. In artifact #4, a letter, it states, “It is very cold here and the snow never melts.” In northern Alaska there are areas where, due to temperature, the snow never melts. HW – Finish Step # 4 – Packets due Monday! – Start of Class!

How to do step #4 There is much evidence that points to this civilization being located in Canada. For example, a letter written to a king from John Smith explains, “we are from the land with the red maple leaf” (Document #6) Canada has a red maple leaf on its flag.
