Mimaropa (Region IV-B) By: Angelique Delarazan Period 6

General Information The Philippine Republic's Region IV is comprised eleven provinces with eight cities. Most of these provinces are in the southern part of the island of Luzon. It has subsequently been subdivided into Calabarzon (Region IVA) Mimaropa (Region IVB).

Political Divisions The name is a portmanteau combining the names of its provinces, which are: Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan. Province Capital Population (2000) Area (km²) Pop. density (per km²) Occidental Mindoro Mamburao 380,250 5,879.9 64.7 Oriental Mindoro Calapan City 681,818 4,364.7 156.2 Marinduque Boac 217,392 959.3 226.6 Romblon 264,357 1,355.9 195 Palawan Puerto Princesa City 892,660 12,496.3 71.4

Occidental Mindoro Occidental Mindoro is the western part of Mindoro, found in the south of the Province of Batangas and northwest of the Visayas. Agriculture is basically the major industry in Occidental Mindoro and holds the record of being the Southern Tagalog Region's leading rice producer. Other major agricultural products that are likewise exported from the province include coconut, corn, tobacco, garlic, mango, banana and peanut. Rice Field The province is gifted with varied attractions that are mostly natural. The place has virgin forests, beautiful white sand beaches, islands and islets rich with marine life, coral gardens, caves and waterfalls. Kuala Abang Beach

Oriental Mindoro Oriental Mindoro shares the eastern half of the large island of Mindoro Island. It has historical sights like the old Spanish fortress, Kuta, and The Cross at Muelle. Puerto Galera offers a lot of pleasure with its numerous resorts and beaches like the Punta Guarda Beach resort, White Beach resort and the Sabang Beach located east of Puerto Galera. Fishing is a profitable industry in the province with 13 coastal towns considered to be good fishing grounds producing fishes like tuna, mackerel, snapper, anchovy, and round scads. Puerto Galera. Kuta

Marinduque Marinduque is a heart-shaped island and the smallest province of Region IV, located between the Bondoc Peninsula and Mindoro Islands. Marinduque is popular for the Moriones Festival. A unique and lively Lenten custom featuring masked men, called "morions", dressed in colorful costumes in resemblance of Roman soldiers. The festivity is about the story of Longinus reenacted in pantomime and held during the entire Holy Week. Moriones Festival

Romblon The Province of Romblon is a cluster of twenty islands lying at the center of the Philippine archipelago. Dubbed as the "Marble Country" which fittingly describes the rich deposits of marble found all over the province. Quarries on these islands produce raw marble for sculpture and construction purposes. Romblon is the only place in the Southeast Asia with the marble deposits of commercial value. Romblon Marble Fort San Andres is a part of Romblon’s historical sites. It is an old, Spanish fort made of coral bricks built atop the hills of San Andres. It served as the lookout for marauding Muslim and Dutch pirates during the Spanish period. The fort is now used as a weather station. Fort San Andres

Palawan Palawan is a paradise with a cluster of beautiful islands that lies southwest of Luzon. The province is a melting pot of around 87 different cultural groups and races who live together in peace and harmony. Basically, its culture bears a strong influence from China, India and the Middle East. Influx of migrants from other parts of the Philippines, particularly from Muslim Mindanao, accounts for the high population growth rate. Coron Island Palawan Museum in Puerto Princesa is an institution that showcases the history, culture, music, art and crafts of Palawan. Its exhibits shows the archeological, ethnological, collections, such as jars and porcelains, hunting and trapping tools used by the early ancestors, musical instrumental and brassware, some artifacts from Tabon Caves. Palawan Museum

Language and Climate Language : Climate: Tagalog is widely spoken in the region. In Marinduque, Tagalog is spoken with a unique blend of Bicolano and Visayan languages. In the interior of Mindoro, various languages are spoken by Mangyans, and they include Iraya, Alangan, Tawbuid, Hanunoo, Tadyawan, Buhid, and Ratagnon. Romblon, being near the Visayas, has three main languages that belong to Visayan language family namely, Romblomanon, Asi, and Onhan. Palawan, on the other hand, has its own set of native languages such as Cuyonon, Tagbanwa and Palawano that are still spoken by significant numbers of people. Climate: Overall, Mimaropa is characterized by a relatively dry season from January to April and wet during the rest of the year.  The areas covered by this type of climate are eastern coast of Palawan, the provinces of Marinduque and Romblon, eastern parts of Mindoro Islands.

Thank You. The End
