Kinetic and Potential Energy Today we are going to learn about Kinetic and Potential energy. I can identify types of energy, including potential and kinetic.

The ability to do work or cause change. Definition of Energy… The ability to do work or cause change. In order to understand the different forms of energy, you have to know what the term “energy” means. Energy is the ability or the capacity of an object to do work. This is measured in two different ways : capability of doing work- known as potential energy, and the conversion of the capability to motion- called kinetic energy.

Energy is classified as either potential energy or kinetic energy.

Potential Energy Potential energy Stored up energy or energy at rest.

KINETIC ENERGY: Energy in motion

Potential energy is stored energy or energy at rest. It is the highest point, so it will fall the furthest, so it has more potential energy. What point would have the greatest amount of potential energy?

Potential energy is stored energy or energy at rest. The lowest point would have the least amount of stored energy or potential energy. What point would have the least amount of potential energy?

Kinetic energy is ….. energy in motion. As potential energy decreases, kinetic energy increases. So, the greatest amount of kinetic energy would be…. just before the ball hits the ground.

potential ____________ energy? kinetic ________ energy?

When the bow string is pulled back all the way, the type of energy demonstrated would be potential Once the string is let go the arrow will fly toward the bulls eye. The arrow moving demonstrates ___________ energy. kinetic

We can now look at other forms of energy and classify them as either potential energy or kinetic energy

Types of Energy

Types of Energy Mechanical -

Mechanical energy: moving energy Kinetic Energy!

Types of Energy Mechanical - Electromagnetic -

Electromagnetic Energy? Light energy Includes energy from gamma rays, xrays, ultraviolet rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwave and radio bands

Types of Energy Mechanical - Electric - Electromagnetic -

Electric Energy - energy that comes through electrical lines or lightning.

Types of Energy Mechanical - Electric - Electromagnetic - Thermal -

Thermal energy is heat energy.

Types of Energy Nuclear - Mechanical - Electric - Electromagnetic - Thermal -

Nuclear energy – Nuclear power plants, atomic bomb, stars (sun- solar energy)

Types of Energy Nuclear - Mechanical - Chemical - Electric - Electromagnetic - Thermal -

Chemical Energy Chemical energy is stored on the end of a match. Energy released from chemical reactions. Chemical energy is stored on the end of a match.

Examples of Chemical Energy Fossil fuels battery food

Where do we get our energy from?

Where do we get our energy? When we eat food, what type of reaction occurs to give us the energy? CHEMICAL

Plants take in the energy from the sun. They use this energy in a CHEMICAL process of photosynthesis to make food for the plant to grow.

Potential energy is stored energy or energy at rest. It is the highest point, so it will fall the furthest, so it has more potential energy. What point would have the greatest amount of potential energy?
