What motivates an author to write? What is the purpose?

The reason an author writes is called the Author’s Purpose. Authors write for many reasons… the 3 most common are: To Persuade To Inform To Entertain

What do they mean? An author may give you facts or true information about a subject. If so, they are writing to inform. Some authors write fiction stories or stories that are not true. They write these stories to entertain you. Other authors may write to persuade or to try to get you to do something.

What is the author’s purpose if the passage contains . . . Facts or true Information? to Inform or Teach to Entertain Fiction? Tries to get you to do something? to Persuade or Convince

Remembering them is as easy as P.I.E.

Draw your own author’s pie to help you remember: Inform: to teach or give information to the reader Entertain: to hold the attention of the reader through enjoyment Persuade: to convince the reader of a certain point of view
