Functions of the Family The family continues to serve many of the same functions today as it did in the past. What might some be? Families may live differently today, but they still serve four basic functions

#1 Families socialize children Families teach children skills Teach children love and acceptance Families provide a nurturing environment Families interpret the rules and standards of society. Families train and provide examples of how these standards apply. Giving birth to provide a new generation.

# 2 Families meet physical needs Family is responsible for providing: Food Clothing Shelter Healthcare

# 3 Families affect status and roles in society Your family can influence the status you have in society(working class, middle class, upper class) Your family gives you your racial or ethnic identity, influences customs and traditions. Your family will influence the roles you play of daughter, son, and expectations for adult roles such as husband, wife, and career path.

# 4 Families provide close relationships Family can be a source of close relationships Living together Loving and caring for each other Sharing joys and solving problems Planning for the future together Meeting each members emotional needs
