Other methods to express concentration

There are several different ways to express concentration Grams per liter (C=g/L) Volume percent (%v/v) %v/v= vol. solute (ml) vol. solution (ml)

What is the volume % of 15 ml of pure alcohol dissolved in 250 ml of water? %v/v = vol solute (ml) vol. solution (ml) = 15/ 265 (alcohol + water) = 0.056 (X 100 to convert to a %) = 5.6% v/v

Mass percent (%m/m) %m/m = mass solute (g) mass solution (g) To convert from %v/v, %m/m or % m/v to g/L all you do is multiply by 10.

Concentration in parts per million (ppm) Used when the concentration of solute is extremely small The number of parts of solute in 1 million parts of solution 1 ppm = 1 g of solute in 1 000 000 g of solution

What is a ppm? 1 ppm = 1 g/ 1 000 000 g 1 ppm = 1 mg/ kg 1ppm = 1 g / 1000L 1ppm = 1 mg/ L

To convert from g/L to ppm you multiply by 1000 Ex: 5 g/L = 5000 ppm Get it?
