PEAK Student Energy Action Reach

Workshop Goals To provide you with strategies and tools for... Inspiring students to take action towards wise (strategic) management of Earth’s natural resources; Integrating Next Generation Science Standards’ three-dimensional teaching and learning around human impact and energy/water; Designing (+ redesigning) solutions to human problems; and Partnering with green STEM career professionals to help increase application of skills for career preparation.

California Waterways: Supply + Demand The Journey To the Tap California has the world’s largest and busiest water system. The system oversees more than 40,000,000 acre feet of water every year to serve over 30 million people and almost 6 million acres of agricultural land. About two-thirds of CA’s population resides in southern CA, but approximately two-thirds of the state’s rainfall occurs in northern CA. The Water-Energy Nexus In addition to the energy used to transport water from the source to the tap, think about the water that is used to produce, power, or create everyday products. Just like energy is used to get water to consumers, water is also used in the electrical generation process (even when renewable energy sources are involved)

Desalination Process

Electrical Generation Process

Human Use of Earth’s Resources How do we generate electrical energy to power up our lives? What resources do we use? How do we use fossil fuels to provide humans with useable water? What are some negative environmental impacts of using Earth’s resources? How can we address climate change in the middle school classroom?

Next Generation Science Standards Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI) ENERGY PS3.A: Definitions of Energy PS3.B: Conservation of Energy and Energy Transfer PS3.C: Relationship Between Energy and Forces EARTH AND HUMAN ACTIVITY ESS3.A: Natural Resources ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems ENGINEERING DESIGN ETS1.A: Defining Engineering Problems

Next Generation Science Standards- Engineering a Solution to a Human Problem Science + Engineering Practices (SEI) 1. Asking questions and defining problems 2. Developing and using models 3. Planning and carrying out investigations 4. Analyzing and interpreting data 5. Using mathematics and computational thinking 6. Constructing explanations and designing solutions 7. Engaging in argument from evidence 8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
