Adding and Subtracting Polynomials Chapter 4 Section 4.1
Objective Students will add and subtract polynomials
Vocabulary Monomial Constant Polynomial Binomial Trinomial Coefficient Similar Simplified
Concept Monomial – expression that is either a numeral, a variable, or the product of a numeral & variables. Constant monomial – a numeral Binomial – 2 terms Trinomial – 3 terms Polynomial – sum of monomials
Concept Coefficient – the number in front of the variables Similar – like terms, have the exact same variables but can have different numbers Simplified – when no two of its terms are similar.
Concept When adding and subtracting polynomials together, you may only combine like terms together. When combining like terms together, you add or subtract the numbers, variables and exponents DO NOT CHANGE.
Example Simplify -6x3 + 3x2 + x2 + 6x3 – 5
Example Add 3x2y + 4xy2 – 2y3 + 3 and x2y + 3y3 – 4
Subtract –a2 – 5ab + 4b2 – 2 from 3a2 – 2ab – 2b2 – 7 Example Subtract –a2 – 5ab + 4b2 – 2 from 3a2 – 2ab – 2b2 – 7
Concept 3a2 – 2ab – 2b2 – 7 - -a2 – 5ab + 4b2 – 2 **Set up either way, you solve the same
