High School Graduation Requirements English – 4 years (40 credits) Mathematics – 2 years (20 credits) must pass algebra and geometry Or, two years of math if you started at geometry or higher in the 9th grade Science – 2 years (20 credits) must pass one year physical science (physics or chemistry) and 1 year life science (biology) World History – 1 year (10 credits) U.S. History – 1 year (10 credits)

High School Graduation Requirements Government/Economics – 1 semester each (5 credits each) Fine Arts – 1 year (10 credits) Career Preparation – 1 semester (5 credits) Health/Guidance – 1 semester each (5 credits each) Physical Education – 2 years (20 credits) Elective Classes (70 credits) 220 credits (earned 9th through 12th grade)

+1 Honors/AP Courses Students are encouraged to take more challenging work at the secondary level Universities assign extra weight to grades in honors-level courses (for C or higher) Most AP (Advanced Placement) classes are taken the junior and/or senior year of high school All grades in required courses for colleges must be a C or higher If you take an AP course you should plan to take the AP exam

Honors/AP Courses +1 AP Contracts will be available when we pick up your course requests AP classes require attending an orientation meeting Placement in AP classes will be based on teacher recommendations or pre-requisites Attending and AP Orientation AND turning in a signed/completed contract does not guarantee placement in an AP class AP classes are year-long commitments!!! If you change your mind about an AP class, you must let your counselor know by July 31st.

Summer School box is for counselors’ use Go over your choices with your parents HAVE YOUR PARENTS SIGN THE FORM Forms will be picked up in the World History classes on Wednesday and Thursday (All Davis/Davis students should be ready on Thursday) If anything is not filled in or signed, packets WILL NOT be collected or discussed If packets are not returned, we will pick your classes for you Sports

Q Registration Step 3: “Add/Edit Requests” 11 Clark Magnet High School 2017-2018

Q Registration Step 4: “Add Selected Class”, and click SUBMIT Please click “Submit” only once, even if you get an error message. Check your schedule an hour later. Continue this process until you have selected BOTH “A” or “1” and “B” or “2” classes.

Q Registration Step 5: “Add Selected Course” Step 6: Select Alternates for electives or for classes that will be taken in summer school The right hand column is where your first choices go…in this case, the 1st choice is Journalism and the alternate is Ceramics You can select alternate courses in case you do not get your first choice. First select those courses in the Add/Edit Requests mode. In the example to the left, Journalism 1, Journalism 2, Ceramics 1 and Ceramics 2 are already requested. Journalism is the FIRST choice, and Ceramics is the alternate. NOTE: DO NOT request the same alternate for more than one course. In the Add/Edit Requests mode, click the alternate course’s drop down menu in the “Alternate For” column, and select your first choice course. Click SUBMIT when done.

Q Registration Step 9: When done adding classes, and after you have printed your schedule, click “Sign Out” Your registration window begins today, January 30th and ends Wednesday, February 1st at midnight.

Summer School Semester 1: June 5 – June 20 Semester 2: June 21 – July 7 (July 4 – Holiday) 5 hours a day; 5 days a week Glendale Unified School District Remedial Summer School Making up an F grade in a class needed for high school graduation Making up a D/F grade in Algebra 2, Geometry or Algebra 1 Remedial classes are offered free of charge

Summer School Glendale Educational Foundation Summer School Fees below are tentative…they are from last year Registration: check online at http://www.gefsummerschool.org Payment by check or money order Enrichment Summer School You may NOT sign up for US History Applications will be available March 1st Regular Payment $570 for a full year course $285 for a one semester course For those on Free/Reduced Lunch $470 for a full year course $235 for a one semester course There will be NO refunds for dropping or not completing a course once it has begun.

How to Stay Competitive for College… Take a challenging course schedule and do well. If you plan to take an AP course, then you should plan to take the AP exam Take initiative in pursuing your interests and passions Get involved in school activities Get involved in COMMUNITY SERVICE Explore leadership opportunities at school, home and in the community Strive to do your best in ALL things

PSAT All juniors are encouraged to take the PSAT/NMSQT in October, 2017. They will be sold in the office at the end of September. Be sure to read the bulletin. 11th graders taking the exam will automatically be entered in the competition for scholarships from National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Additional benefits of the PSAT Exam: Connects students to colleges and universities across the country and to scholarship organizations. Prepares students for the new SAT and college and fuels practice recommendations on Khan Academy (free personalized and focused practice)! Matches students with AP courses that make the most of their academic strengths.  AP classes can provide an edge in the college admission process, and an opportunity to earn college credit. 

WRAP-UP Select classes with your future in mind Q & A All Davis/Davis students– be prepared on Wednesday All other students: Return dates are this Wednesday, February 1st and Thursday, February 2nd in your World History classes….come prepared! Bring: completed planning sheet packet (including transcript and completed 4-year plan), copy of online course request verification form (Make sure your parents sign ALL the above mentioned papers…in three places!) Select classes with your future in mind Q & A
