John Winthrop 1588-1649 Born in England Founding governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony Wanted to achieve a Puritan utopia Wrote: A Model of Christian Charity “City on a Hill”

Anne Hutchinson 1591-1643 Well educated in England Came to America seeking religious freedom as a Puritan Shared her opinions about religion with others After her trial she left Massachusetts for Rhode Island

Roger Williams Roger Williams was a pastor in Salem, Massachusetts. He was thrown out of Massachusetts for speaking out against the Puritan church. He escaped with the help of the Wampanoag natives who protected him. He founded Rhode Island, south west of Massachusetts. He allowed religious freedom here. Rhode Island was one of the only colonies not to have an official religion.

John Smith John Smith was one of the founding members of Jamestown. He did more than anyone else to colonize Virginia. He was elected president of the Jamestown colony council and helped the colony recover from its earlier problems. He organized trading with the Native Americans and the building of houses in the colony. His life may or many not have been saved by the native princess, Pocahontas.

William Penn William Penn was an English Quaker who founded Pennsylvania. Penn was granted land in America because King Charles II wanted to try a “Holy Experiment”. Also the king owed Penn’s father money, so he gave Penn the land instead. Penn was important for two main reasons. One was that Penn was the founder of Pennsylvania and the other was because of his Quaker religion.

Rhode Island Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams. This colony was founded for religious freedom. Rhode Island was the first colony to have a synagogue for Jewish worshipers. The land that would make Rhode Island was bought from the native tribe called the Narragansett. Rhode Island did not initially have public schools. Only wealthy children could afford to go to school.

Pennsylvania Pennsylvania was founded in 1643 by William Penn. Penn was with the Quaker peace group. Penn and the Quakers came to Pennsylvania for religious freedom. They wanted to find land where all religions were accepted. Pennsylvania was named after William Penn, its founder. In Latin Pennsylvania means “Penn’s Woods”. The major city in Pennsylvania was Philadelphia. The Quakers gave the city this name because of their belief in friendship and brotherhood.

Virginia The Virginia colony was named after the Virgin Queen, Queen Elizabeth I. The year that Virginia was founded was 1609. The main religion in Virginia was Anglican. The person who founded their colony was John Smith and Jamestown settlers. Virginia was founded because colonists wanted to find gold and riches. The Native Americans of Virginia wee the natives from the Algonquian tribe. The colonists that interacted with Native Americans was John Smith. He made peace with Indians and got protection from Powhatan and his tribe.
